Non believer wondering if the house is haunted. Lighthearted!

Disclaimer - I don’t really believe in ghosts - I’d say I’m a 90% non believer.

However! My house is around 25 years old so not your usual Victorian spooky set up. Since we moved in we have had low level weirdness.

  1. footsteps heard upstairs (it’s a detached house)
  2. stuff getting knocked over in unoccupied rooms
  3. doors opening and closing by themselves
  4. light switch in airing cupboard turned itself on (as in, the actual switch flipped).
  5. taps turning themselves on
  6. voices
  7. came out of living room, couldn’t get back in as somehow a little table had become positioned behind the door
  8. Dogs barking at the stairs
  9. just now, a loud clear sound of someone brushing against the hallway wall (I’m here alone).
  10. waking up to a woman in the bedroom which I later put down to being half asleep and hallucinating.

DH has experienced all this stuff too but refuses to talk about it.

So … what would you think??

Feel free to share haunted house stories! 😁

That all sounds very woo OP. And you are only a 10% believer! 😳😳😳

NuffSaidSam · 17/07/2022 13:30

Yep, you've got a ghost.

Or a neurological problem. Is there a gas leak?

😂 no - I’m not imagining any of it 😂

the woman in the bedroom I maybe imagined … the voices are maybe from outside and “travelling”

but what the rest of it?

I would certainly want to check for a gas leak or a source of odourless but hallucinogenic fumes or a source of infrasound.

The rest of it you're maybe not imagining but doing and then forgetting (taps/lights/doors).

Maybe you turned the light in the airing cupboard on and forgot? In fact, that is what happened isn't it? Because ghosts aren't real and lights can't turn themselves on.

Rubyruby101 · 17/07/2022 13:42

Sounds like you have a ghost . I never believed either until I worked in a shop that had one . Do you ever hear whispering ? See shadows ? X

CounsellorTroi · 17/07/2022 13:46

Light switches can turn on and off by themselves

Sounds like jinns. Common for those who have them in the house.
You can shout loudly and confidently at them to go away.
The other option is living with them but if they are in the way of your day to day living that's not going to be an option.
I'd tell them to go away.

Well that's one problem solved.

Can taps turn themselves on too?

onmywayamarillo · 17/07/2022 16:30

What was land used for before the house was built? That's what I would be looking up!

EatYourVegetables · 17/07/2022 16:36

@CounsellorTroi 😨😨😨 OMG. Thanks for sharing, this blew my mind!!!

So, OP: everyone knows you don’t get ghosts in a newbuild, only in Victorian houses. But as @CounsellorTroi said, you should investigate as otherwise your house might burn down (which would be suitable for a Victorian horror novel).

Jibbajabba1 · 17/07/2022 16:52

Oooh how long has this been going on?

Also, curious to know what’s the difference between a jinn and ghost haunting?

NuffSaidSam · 17/07/2022 17:38

This thread is blowing my mind! But at least we know the OP doesn't have a ghost!

Herani · 17/07/2022 18:04

The thing is, unless you have something like this happen to you, it’s hard to believe in ghosts.
Both DH and I have scientific backgrounds; I’m interested in the concept of hauntings, he isn’t. We lived in a house in London where a similar list of things occurred over two years.
It became unexplainable. Taps turning on and off. Coming home after work to water running, lights on, many cupboard doors open. Books would be on the floor as though they had fallen off perfectly straight bookshelves. Footsteps on stairs and doors upstairs closing when we were downstairs. We lost two cleaners because they got spooked, one having seen a lady in a long dress zip past the open bedroom door.

All locks were changed, so no one could be doing this. Cats would never ever go upstairs.
Came home from work at lunchtime one day and all kitchen units were open. I closed them and went upstairs to get changed. Went down to find taps running, two lamps on and a kitchen cupboard door slammed shut as I stood watching.
Yes, I did put the property on the market within two weeks of that. Strangely, it changed hands six times in three years after us. I do find it odd that ‘ghosts’ would choose to communicate like that….it was bloody annoying!
