To think people walking dogs in this heat are twats?

Just that really. It totally blows my mind. If you’re one of those people who has been walking your dog during the height of the heat in the last few days - I’m
genuinely interested to know why?

And the bloody idiot who left their dog in the car at the supermarket the other day in the full heat of noon.

Mamamia7962 · 16/07/2022 15:47

Actually I haven't seen any dogs out at all during the day so I think people are finally getting the message. I take mine out early morning and after 7.30pm in the evening. During the day they can wander in and out of the garden if they want.

Tisyphone · 16/07/2022 15:48

I’ve seen no one walking a dog at the height of the heat. Lots early morning and late last night.

Mamamia7962 · 16/07/2022 15:49

Wolfiefan- I hope you reported it at the customer service desk so they could make an announcement over the tannoy system..

Iamclearlyamug · 16/07/2022 15:49

I live in a flat so have to take mine out otherwise he can't even pee. I put him in the car with the air conditioning on, drive to a local field which has plenty of shade and let him wander for 10 minutes to do his business and then we go home. Would never let him set foot on a pavement or anything in this heat, but without a garden I have to take him out.

And before anyone comes on moaning 'why did you get a dog without having a garden' he came with my OH when he moved in with me (his landlord sold his place and couldn't find anywhere else that would allow pets) so here we are 🤷‍♀️

Wolfiefan · 16/07/2022 15:50

@Mamamia7962 i put my shopping in my car and walked back but the car had gone. No way would I leave my dog like that though. Not even for a few minutes.

Thermalpants · 16/07/2022 15:50

YANBU It makes me mad watching dogs being walked when it’s hot. The owners should be made to walk in a heavy coat and no shoes to see how they like it.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/07/2022 15:52

I'm walking mine in the morning then maybe a walk in the evening but she doesn't seem bothered. A nice shady spot under a bush in the garden is doing her nicely.

XingMing · 16/07/2022 15:53

Around here, it's been very busy with dogs and humans in the shaded woodland areas next to streams early in the mornings and again in the evenings. For the rest of the day, my dog is flaked out in the shade. Too hot for a black dog with a thick coat to do much....

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/07/2022 15:55

Moat people here (small east coast seaside town) walk their dogs really early or late, as we do; ours usually also gets an early afternoon walk but not whilst this weather is so hot.

We left her indoors yesterday afternoon and walked along the sea front to go for a coffee - we encountered an astonishing number of people walking their dogs! Which bit of 'don't walk your dog in the heat' do these people not get?

coffeecupsandfairylights · 16/07/2022 15:55

YANBU but we had a thread like this the other day and it was half full of people defending it 🙄

Wombat100 · 16/07/2022 16:00

@coffeecupsandfairylights crazy isn’t it. I was at the coast the other day - loads of people walking their dogs in the middle of the day and sitting with them in the middle of the beach with no shade. There’s literally no excuse is there!! Leave the bloody dogs at home, a few days without a walk won’t kill them.

My spaniel has been on the patio in the shade (restrained by his lead cos he keeps going insane at the back fence - there is SOMETHING on the other side.
I've just let him off and he is now lying in full sun, so I'm about to bring him back into the shade.

teenagetantrums · 16/07/2022 16:03

Yandu. I was at the beach earlier. Midday boiling hot and people walking thier dogs on the concrete footpath. I would not put my feet on it.

Figgygal · 16/07/2022 16:07

I drove my dog 2 mins to the local wood rather than walked it
Kept in the shade for a short walk
Brought him home to a refrigerated towel
All by 11.15
Have seen a few people out 12-2 just want to yell at them 😡

We wont be out at all in daytime next 3 days. First thing and last thing only

Badger1970 · 16/07/2022 16:10

Because sadly there isn't an IQ test before being allowed to own a dog.

Some people are pig shit thick and ignorant.

I've been at a town festival all day and I've spent most of it tripping over pissed off dogs. In fact .Sat in front of one now that just to piss it off more is wearing a padded harness......its some sort of poodle mix and already has a.thick coat in 25 plus degree heat. They're absolute idiots, I really wish all the PCSOs milling about had done something. As it is shop owners have tried to help by putting put waterbowls 🙄

magicstar1 · 16/07/2022 16:19

26 here this morning and my friend phoned at 12 while walking her husky. I told her she shouldn’t have him out and she said but it’s nice and cool here….she’s about 20 minutes away so not cooler.
I just had to bring my dog to the vets - about a ten minute walk, but we took the car. Windows down, air con and cooling mat. It was still far too hot to be out.

I took my dog out at 6am it wasn't that hot then ...

AlwaysLatte · 16/07/2022 16:24

I had to take my dog to the vet today, but there was no parking in their car park. I parked literally around the corner and walked in (about 15 steps away). A car came past and someone yelled at me. I agree that they absolutely should NOT be walked in this heat though. Ours is lying on the cool kitchen tiles right now rather than on his usual run through the fields.

paddingtonstares · 16/07/2022 16:25

DDog is getting 1 walk a day at the mo, at 9pm..she starts pestering about 8pm...I have sat her down and explained why she has to wait..she gives me the 🤔 look 🤣
We get a few days a year of hot weather, it won't matter she doesn't get walked. We can play games and do scentwork instead.

Why didn't you mention something to the PCSOs? They're literally community support officers - there to support the community.

AlwaysLatte · 16/07/2022 16:26

NB before anyone piles on it was 10.00 and the pavements weren't hot - I checked before letting him out of the car!
