WIBU To Buy A Freezer?

lb66 · 16/07/2022 00:45

We had a stand alone freezer up 'til about 15 years ago when it suddenly stopped working and we had to throw it out. The only freezer we have now is the little one above the fridge. I've been asking, suggesting, hinting for us to purchase a new one ever since but DH keeps putting it off, saying it just another appliance to use up electricity (he's obsessed with how much electricity costs) and the little one above the fridge will do. I have never been in a financial position to just go out and purchase one but I have enough money now if I wanted.

Fast forward to now.

DH and DS have just returned from a week's fishing trip and brought home so much fish they had nowhere to store it all. On their drive home they called in to an appliance store, and your guessed it, bought a freezer. I'm bloody furious.

WIBU to go out and buy my own little freezer?

If you would like to buy a freezer, buy a freezer. Seems like an odd thing to do when you just got a new freezer though.

bellac11 · 16/07/2022 00:53

I dont understand what you are asking

What is WIBU, does this mean - would I be unreasonable, or was I being unreasonable

If its the latter, have you already bought the freezer?

If you havent already bought a freezer why would you now that your husband has just bought one, where are you going to store all these feezers?

If there’s enough money for DH to go on a week’s fishing trip and buy a freezer on a whim then I’d be bloody furious that he’s refused to buy a freezer for 15 years based on a small amount of extra electricity !!

Do you make financial/purchasing decisions jointly OP or does DH hold the purse strings?

I don’t think buying your own freezer is the solution here. I think a joint account is…

fallfallfall · 16/07/2022 04:54

I get it, when you wanted it replaced it was a firm no. But now that he needs it he bought it. Kind of like it’s for him and not you.
id point it out to him how ignorant of your idea he had been for 15 years.
id then rub his nose in it frequently (well a few times and with family as well).

WeAreTheHeroes · 16/07/2022 05:03

I'm not surprised you're annoyed. Yes, a freezer costs money and you have to pay for the electricity to run one, but it can really help save money and time in the long run. I'd have ignored him and bought one as I wouldn't put up with only having the use of a bloody ice box.

Wait until you've calmed down then tell him how this his behaviour has made you feel.

newbiename · 16/07/2022 05:21

Your husband has bought one now so why would you need to buy one ?
However , I wouldn't have been waiting permission to buy one for 15 years.

I'm guessing the freezer is the tip of the iceberg in terms of controlling behaviour OP. Over the last 15 years without a freezer I'm guessing more money has been spent on not being able to store food/your life has been made more difficult in terms of food prep/shopping as a result. I think it's time to take a look at your relationship and see if it's healthy or not. Don't buy another freezer, that money could probably be put to much better use if it comes to it.

Yodaisawally · 16/07/2022 06:43

Is the fish the issue?!

Why havemt you just bought a freezer in the last 15 years?

ShirleyPhallus · 16/07/2022 06:45

I think this is slightly misleading, this is really about your husband being a controlling arse than a freezer right

Why not just buy the freezer. I can’t imagine not saying “we need a freezer, this is the one I’m buying” then just getting it if you need it

And I wouldn't be getting involved in any of the gutting and preparing of the fish they've brought home.

Not that I'd be eating it anyway seeing as it's been likely been hanging around in hot weather for an unknown amount of time.

Yes the freezer will need time to chill down to the right temperature before it can be used. Your husband sounds like a twit OP.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/07/2022 07:09

If they've bought a freezer, surely job done. There's a freezer now.

DenholmElliot1 · 16/07/2022 07:21

You've got a freezer now so it's all sorted. You didn't have to wait for 15 years you should have just brought one. There must have been some time in the past 15 years that you could find £200 for a freezer so I don't buy the "didn't have any money" excuse. No, this one's on you.

Go do some batch cooking and fill your new freezer!

slashlover · 16/07/2022 08:00

WIBU to go out and buy my own little freezer?

Do you mean that you want to buy a third freezer?

Fairislefandango · 16/07/2022 08:05

You wanted a freezer all that time, and waited until you have a new one to buy another one?! Confused

onlywhenidream · 16/07/2022 08:07

"I've never been in the financial position "

Does that mean the family has money but you don't have access to it?

TheWayoftheLeaf · 16/07/2022 14:32

I'd have just bought a freezer 15 years ago.
