To wonder how you manage Uber/cab trips with a small child?

Do you somehow manage to find cars with car seats supplied? Do you take your own car seat and lug it around when you get there? Do you go without a car seat and just accept the risk (after all, it wasn’t so very long ago that seatbelts weren’t a legal requirement even for adults and most people survived fine)? Or do you just avoid this type of travel with a small child?

Somebody, please?

Child on my lap or next to me. Never got a cab that had a carseat before

I believe you can make journeys in taxis legally without a car seat. We often have to send babies and toddlers in spica plasters home in taxis as they can't fit in their car seat, so can't go in their own car.

TwinkleInMyEye123 · 20/07/2022 22:55

@Toddlerteaplease do you know if that includes Ubers?

Undecidedandtorn · 20/07/2022 22:56

How old are we talking? I used to take a booster seat with me

@Undecidedandtorn Talking about a toddler.

if the taxi is travelling at less than 30mph (i.e. only in a city), then I used to just take the child & strap them in the waist band of the adult seat belt. that is legal (but not optimal) but the risks are low

when booking a taxi back from an airport on the motorway, I booked one that could provide a car seat.

alnawire · 20/07/2022 23:12

If the child is 3 or under they should travel unrestrained. Over 3 should use the adult seat belt.

NEVER put the seat belt round you and your child.

^ posted too soon.

That's the law btw, not advice. I would never travel my child without an appropriate seat unless it was an absolute emergency.

I never used one when my 3 were young, always another mode of transport as to me it’s a risk driving a small child unrestrained - no matter what the law says.

Yes this.

In London the traffic crawls..

@Darbs76 this is by feeling too but my DH disagrees. We’ve done it before and DD was fine, so what’s the problem?

Urgh. 'We did it and were fine' is no reason for others to drop their safety standards.
