So I got a new phone for my birthday, but the sim card from my old phone is too big. I've tried googling it but I don't understand what to do. I'm with tesco, sim only. Do I go to tesco and buy a new sim, but how do I keep my number and contacts. Am going on hol on Sat and wanted to use the new phone for google maps and stuff like that cos it's better. I suppose I could bring the old phone and use it as a mobile hotspot. Oh lord my brain is fried. Can anyone explain in simple terms

Every SIM cards I've seen recently (last five years?) are made to suit a variety of sizes - you just snap off successive rings of surround until you get the size you need.
if not, phone your mobile provider and ask them to make you a new SIM with your existing number but in the right size.

You have two choices. You can buy a cutter from Amazon or eBay, and cut the card down to size, or you can ask your service provider to send you a new card for your current account in the right size, which you’ll then just swap over.

How old is your existing SIM card? The ones for the last few years are multi sims and contain 3 sims in one, nano, micro and full sized sims. Older sims are micro or full sized.

if it's a newer sim, there'll be something that can broken off to make it smaller. A quick Google search will explain it better than I can.

If you have an older sim, you'll need to get it replaced, just get in touch with Tesco Mobile and ask, you can still keep your number and contacts are stored on the phone. I've had the same number for years and I've had numerous sims in that time.

Yeah I've had the sim card for nearly 3 years but I do remember when I got it it had those rings where you pick the size you want and mine was the smallest. The new phone wants an even smaller one. In any case I wont have it by saturday will i. Bloody hell. Why is everything so f** difficult. Thank you both so much for responding.X

You may be able to cut your existing SIM to fit using a special cutter (or taking a chance and using a Stanley knife -there are printable templates online)

Or you can follow instructions here www.tescomobile.com under "swap your sim"

Thanks @MaryChild If I go into tesco will they be able to do it there and then. I have to go there tomorrow in any case and there used to be a phone shop, but I'm not sure if it's still there, or if anyone is there. I suppose they will tell me to do it online? thanks again.

Or what they said!

abblie · 15/07/2022 05:27

Tesco will swap your sim for a smaller one

I'd write all your number down before doing this

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/07/2022 05:48

As an aside why are they now so small?

I can barely insert them as, apparently, you should avoid touch the gold contacts; and then they flip out of my fingers and I have to try and find the thing on the floor!

If they get any smaller they will need to come with a trained hamster who can fit it for you.

We have always downloaded the sim template and cut the sim cards to size. Just requires a bit of patience, really

rwalker · 15/07/2022 06:02

They send you new one
pretty sure they couldn’t do it in store
