AIBU?
To get married with COVID
Moongazing · 14/07/2022 21:34
I am having a major meltdown. I have tested positive for COVID today as part of workplace testing, I don't have a single symptom.
I am getting married on Saturday and having a large wedding with 80 day guests and an additional 100 at night. We have spent around 16k on the wedding and I have contacted my insurance provider and they are telling me I am not covered as current guidance would allow me to go ahead. The venue have also said it is too late to cancel as they have ordered all the food and drinks etc
We have saved for years and years to have our wedding the way we want it, I really don't know what to do, if I cancel I will lose so much money and won't be able to have our dream wedding ever
Am I being unreasonable?

@babyjellyfish you asked me if I'd go ahead with my wedding.. I guess it's only hcps who have to adhere to sensible precautions then?
StampOnTheGround · 15/07/2022 10:33
You won't be the only person at your wedding who has Covid based on the current stats, id go, enjoy your day and don't mention anything
PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 15/07/2022 10:38
Just go and enjoy your day. I wouldn't tell guests hotel etc. I went to a wedding last year and came away with covid. Chances are you'll probs be neg by Saturday anyway.

If I were a HCP working with vulnerable patients and it was my own wedding, I would plan to take a honeymoon for a couple of weeks afterwards and go ahead with it, for sure. I'd probably decline invitations to other people's weddings unless I happened to be taking a holiday right afterwards.
But for other people like the OP, no, I don't think it's reasonable to say you need to cancel even though it's not legally required and lose 16k, no.

Update
I have done 3 LFTs today the first one early this morning had a faint line, the next 2 I have done appear negative. We have told all guests and staff/suppliers the situation and nobody has cancelled.
Thanks again for everyone's ideas etc

Great news. Hopefully that means you are at the end of your infection not the beginning.
You're lucky that you haven't been unwell as it's floored everyone we know recently.
Hope all goes well tomorrow and have a lovely day.

Just go ahead and don't even worry about it. I wouldn't tell people as I wouldn't want mass hysteria / swathes of drop outs
On the off-chance you read this, OP: do not take the above adivce. It's shit.
MrsSkylerWhite · 15/07/2022 11:17
So sorry.
you owe it to your guests to tell them and let them decide for themselves. Some will join you but understandably some won’t. I guess it’s a risk anyone planning a big occasion now just has to acknowledge.
saraclara · 15/07/2022 12:34
I'm so glad that the tests are headed to being confidently negative! Hopefully you can update those you've already told, so that they can relax and enjoy the day more easily.
Have a wonderful day!

I would go ahead but warn people say you have no symptoms and government guidance is to carry on as normal but you feel it's only fair to warn people. So no bridal hugging (which is brilliant because it messes with your make up !)

Not telling your guests about your POSITIVE COVID TEST is like not telling someone you are about to have sex with that you have an STD! Why would you EVER want to do that to someone? Think about that diabetic person coming to your wedding, thinking they will be safe who you expose to COVID! They may NOT recover from it all because you wanted to have some "dream wedding"! MY GOD! What possesses people to be so incredibly SELFISH? TELL PEOPLE! Inform them and give them the CHOICE to come! Think about the people who would HATE YOU if someone dear to them DIED because you didn't want to have fewer guests at your wedding! The fact that this is even a DEBATE FOR YOU shows that you aren't thinking clearly! Imagine your mother, father, sister, uncle or aunt passed away from COVID because YOU didn't let them know you are CONTAGIOUS with a disease that has LITERALLY KILLED OVER 6 MILLION PEOPLE! IMAGINE THAT! You can't do that to people! Think about the people at the venue who will be serving you and working at your wedding! What happens to THEIR FAMILIES if they bring home COVID from you? You don't care about them right because it's just about you?
I am so disgusted that you would even have to ask this question! YOU are the reason why I trust NO ONE when it comes to COVID! I am vaccinated, have not attended events, won't attend events, I mask, I glove and wear eye protection STILL and I don't trust ANYONE other than myself! PEOPLE ARE DISHONEST LIARS and they don't care about the scientific data or about others who may get infected down the line! They only care about me, me, me! That's just not right!
LET PEOPLE KNOW YOU ARE COVID POSITIVE!

YOU recovered, but many who get COVID do not! Why would you ENCOURAGE someone to lie by omission? Why wouldn't you think about the outcome for other people? EVERYONE DOES NOT SURVIVE COVID! You did, thankfully, but many have not! Why would you want to put that on another human being if it could be prevented!

Your problems are bigger than Covid. Just saying. And that comes from someone who is as careful as they get with Covid, but you sound unwell.

Tell everyone and say you’ll be wearing a mask and you request that everyone else does as well.
Wear a mask.
Can you move the reception socialising outside as much as possible?

The wedding was yesterday.
