Neighbour getting cross about my cats

Faciadipasta · 14/07/2022 21:07

We have 2 cats. They have a catflap so go outside when they like. My neighbour has started complaining that one of them likes to sit on their outside table (during the day, not while they're actually using it)
AIBU to think this is a bit nuts? I mean we get foxes, magpies, all sorts so why worry about cats?
I mean if the cats were pooing in their garden I'd understand- they use a litter tray so pretty sure they don't - also I'm sure neighbour would have said, but sitting on their table?
Would you try and think.of a way to stop cat doing it or ignore? I've told neighbour to spray the cat with a water pistol if he wants but haven't really got any other ideas.

Terrified of cats. Precious much?!
It’s a cat, it’s what they do. Dogs bark. Birds shit. We destroy the planet they too live in. Take your head out of your arse and turn the other cheek.

ThreeLittleDots · 15/07/2022 00:17

A few people here have mentioned cat-proofing, but others still seem to be confused about how you can stop a cat roaming. I wish more people knew about it and understood the benefits on all sides.

Google Felisafe, or Petprotect, or cat-proof fencing. Or some people do it themselves with DIY materials, fairly cheaply. Cats are safe and happy; no car accidents, no poisoning, no getting lost or stolen, shot at or attacked by other cats. neighbours don't have unwanted visitors.

I am terrified of cats and would hate anyone s cat in my garden . ITs your pet , don’t inflict it on others . Dogs aren’t allowed to roam freely , neither should cats.

😹… errrrr, no! Cat proof your garden. We don’t have to lock our animals away because you have an irrational fear!

You realise we're talking about domestic cats not lions?

cats are legally allowed to roam.

For anyone interested, this is a good FB group offering support on safely cat-proofing gardens, catios and enrichment for housecats:-

Fellow cat owner here, it is your responsibility to keep your cats off your neighbors property. Stop giving cat owners a bad reputation.

none If my cats have ever cared about regular cat deterrents and we have tried them all. Cat fencing and containment is your best option.

No it's not!

cats are legally allowed to roam. If people don't want cats in their garden it's up to them to humanely prevent them.

@Faciadipasta definitely tell them you've had a word with the cat & s/he wants to know how you feel about the foxes, birds, rats & insects?? & s/he's requested they put a cushion on it.

if I didn't want a cat on the outside table I'd just put some foil paper or glass 'pebbles' on it & try something else if that doesn't work.

i don't allow cats on the tables/kitchen work too etc inside the house & id prefer they didn't go on the table outside. So more comfortable options are made available. Visiting cats in the table would automatically initially irritate me, but then I'd think about all the other creature that probably end up on it & get over myself quickly!!

it takes a minute to clean the table before you eat at it, if you're bothered.

Please can you explain how you do this unless you have a house cat.

By having fencing that stops the cat from climbing over it

Bunty55 · 15/07/2022 00:42

They do not like water pistols. Harmless way of dealing with it. I have two cats and if I put my hand up and make a spraying sound with my mouth they scarper !

GiselleRose · 14/07/2022 21:09

Just do what I did and tell your neighbour that you’ll have a chat with your cat about this.

😂love this!

SammyScrounge · 15/07/2022 00:48

😂😂😂 still laughing at Ollie the cat being told about the water feature being replaced next day!

“Terrified of cats.” I’ve heard it all now.

Well some people are scared of spiders.. is being terrified of an animal with claws and sharp teeth really more ridiculous than that?

I wish spraying water worked. I chased a cat from my garden with a water spray and then a few days later I saw him from my window and he squatted in my flower bed and took a shit while making eye contact with me. Bastard.

I do actually like cats btw. I don't want to spray him but my poor old girl cat is scared of him so I try to deter him. He still struts through my garden twice a day everyday though. He clearly has a set lap round the whole neighbourhood.

Arenanewbie · 15/07/2022 02:44

We use a table cover for our outdoor table. I haven’t seen cats sitting on it (and there are plenty coming through the garden) but birds were so I wouldn’t like to use it without covering or wiping.
By the way I wouldn’t tell cat anything myself about this problem but your neighbour should, possibly reinforcing his/her speech by water pistols.

Exactly.

My neighbor's cat was constantly over here. Despite repeated requests to control it, at which they scoffed.

Cat got a ride to a rescue group 100 miles away, by one of my sympathetic coworkers. The next unwelcome visitor will take the same journey.

There is no rational reason to let cats roam, any more than dogs. I refuse to be victimized by it. Not to mention the decimation of the songbirds and small wildlife.

KosherDill · 15/07/2022 03:47

DeanStockwelll · 14/07/2022 21:27

I agree with pp tell your neighbour to put something on the table or tilt it on its side.

Or buy them some spray that cats don't like and give the table a good spray .

Why should they have to tilt furniture to keep someone else's pet off it??

KosherDill · 15/07/2022 03:48

justfiveminutes · 14/07/2022 22:08

I really hate the fact that cats are the only household pet that you're allowed to release and inflict on everyone else.

I used to love feeding the birds until my neighbour's cat started killing them and leaving them for me.

My kids had a little rabbit that the bloody thing wouldn't leave alone.

I was sick of picking up its crap.

Of course what's the point of talking to the owner - cats must be allowed to roam free and cannot be controlled so it's not their problem, it's mine.

No deterrent ever worked.

I once worked with someone who had a true phobia of cats. Her problem of course that she couldn't sit in her own garden.

You can help them to disappear. That's my solution.

Walkden · 15/07/2022 04:08

"We don’t have to lock our animals away because you have an irrational fear!"

I think this attitude and people would be more considerate if ndn started keeping Lillies on their table then, as they are legally allowed to do .....

Terrified Hmm

You sound like an idiot.

Some people are scared of heights, some of snakes, some of closed spaces etc.

Why do you think it's not possible to have a fear of cats?

And I say that as someone who likes cats.

Get a cat which has roaming rights, not a tiger 🙄

Am I understanding this correctly? You asked a coworker to take your neighbour’s cat to a rescue centre 100 miles away because you didn’t like it coming into your garden?

Vikinga · 15/07/2022 05:12

I have a dog now so cats don't tend to stop in my garden much a few neighbrous have multiple cats so they often walk along my fence, hang out the front of my house. But before I got a dog, one of my neighbour's cat spent most of the time with us and I loved it.

I don't know what your neighbour expects you to do about it though!

Are you serious? If you are that is despicable and disgusting. Probably amounts to animal cruelty.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 15/07/2022 05:52

I don't see people scoffing when others say they're scared of dogs or spiders etc. phobia is very real.
OP if I was your neighbour I'd be throwing water on your cat each time to get rid of it.
