Would you get another e-bike?

I had one stolen in January.
I'm over it now, recognise what I should have done to keep the bike more secure and I am ready to invest in extra security for the bike.
My stolen bike was worth £600.
It was a huge convenience for me for work, and I really miss having one. I keep on contemplating buying another one which is around £475 (pay monthly) obviously it's a very basic e bike but does what I need it to do.
I've moved since then and live in a place with security and CCTV now and I'll be able to keep it inside my flat.
However not sure if it's totally stupid and a waste of money. Really miss my old bike.

I'm just aware of how common bike theft is, but I'm hoping that with all the added measures, buying an alarm, registering the bike, putting a gps tracker on, that I might be ok. Though it's never 100% sure

I love my ebike. Would never be without one again. So convenient not having to find parking!

Watchthesunrise · 10/07/2022 15:56

PS if you get a cargo bike you can take kids everywhere and it's fun for them and you don't have to faff with carseats/parking/whinging from the backseat.

That sounds great, I don't have any children but I'd keep it in mind for the future.
I was really upset when the first one got stolen, it was stolen from a housemate as well which makes it even worse, not a random stranger.
I'm just worried I'll be throwing money away again.

However I'd never buy one of the more expensive e bikes as if I had a 2 grand bike stolen I don't know what I'd do

Is there such a thing as bike insurance that way you'll be fine if someone robs it.

girlmom21 · 10/07/2022 15:59

Get the bike if you can afford it and it benefits your life.

OneTC · 10/07/2022 16:05

You did a thread about it when it got nicked?

Definitely get another one

OhMerde · 10/07/2022 16:06

I don't understand your angst. You loved your previous bike, it had loads of benefits for you and you can afford another. Just buy it and get insurance on it.

MrsAvocet · 10/07/2022 16:08

Check your house contents insurance to see if bikes are covered. Our household policy covers bike theft up to £15 000, max £5k for one bike, anywhere in Europe, so I haven't bothered getting specific bike insurance. There are loads of bike only policies of your house insurance doesn't cover it though.

Gezunteit · 10/07/2022 16:36

I'm just hesitant as it's a lot of money if it gets taken again. 100% will be taking out bike insurance. However this has made me feel more sure about getting one, I thought I'd be told that it was a stupid idea.

@Gezunteit, Definitely get one, don't let a thief rob you of some happiness.

May I ask what bike it was as I thought it wasn't possible to get a good e-bike for under £1000.

Gezunteit · 10/07/2022 16:43

Thank you. It was one on the Argos website, had a battery life of around 25 miles which was plenty for me, but obviously the more expensive bikes have 60+.

swapfiets.co.uk/
I don't know where this operates exactly but this is a scheme where you long term rent and they get replaced if stolen or broken

Gezunteit · 10/07/2022 17:04

That sounds brilliant, thank you!
