To wonder where wrong words are coming from

Why when I post do I see completely unintended words in a post when I read it back afterwards? It's happened at least twice today, the first I noticed was a post that (I think from memory) had "spherical" in place of "specific". I'm as sure as I am about anything that I did not type "spherical", nor did I select it from a drop-down list in a spell-checker. As far as I know I have any general autocomplete settings in Windows 11 and Chrome turned off.

Is my brain malfunctioning? It feels like there is a bit of software somewhere that is overriding what I write, but I suppose it's possible that my fingers are for some reason typing different words than the one's my brain thinks it is sending.

(Happened again composing this. After preview have had to edit the last word to correct "send" to "sending". There's no way my fingers were told to type "send. the first time.)

Just to clarify, this problem has been going on for years.

It may be predictive txt on your phone or tablet. Just check the keyboard in your settings there may be a way of disabling predictive txt.......or something like that.

I have to be xonstantly reading and re-reading posts for spelling because my fingers are too wide for the samsung keyboard!

Its a pain in the nether regions🤣🤣

Is it just on Mumsnet?

Getoff · 10/07/2022 14:35

I'm only aware of it happening on Mumsnet. But I don't write much elsewhere, so I'm not sure if it only happens here.

I don't remember it happening on another forum I used to frequent, but I stopped posting there regularly several years ago. I probably did proof-read more rigorously on that forum, and I could correct after posting, so any errors would have been less of an issue, so I might just not be remembering how often it happened.

My phone often thinks it has better grammar than me and changes words after I press the space bar. I don't always catch it and end up writing gibberish.

I use a proper PC, with a full keyboard and giant monitor, not even a laptop, let alone a tablet or phone. Windows 11 settings has a prediction setting somewhere in the typing section that is turned off. I don't think Chrome has a general predictive text function. I do have a spell-checker (can't remember as I type whether it's a Chrome add-on or supplied by Windows 11) that highlights any words that don't spell-check, and that can sometimes cause me to select the wrong word, but as far as I know, doesn't insert words without me consciously asking it to.
