Camping - I think I hate it….

Nik2015 · 09/07/2022 21:29

I've just come home from camping and I just don’t get it.

I find it really hard work and uncomfortable no matter what I do.

I’d love to know what I’m doing wrong?..

So thought we could have a (lighthearted) vote so I could get an idea if it’s just me -

YABU = I love camping
YANBU = I dislike camping

People who actually like camping are masochists

It's the only explanation

user1474315215 · 09/07/2022 21:33

YANBU. The closest we ever got to camping was Eurocamp, as the children were desperate to go camping. Never again. Treks to the loo block in the middle of the night, washing up in communal troughs, total lack of sound proofing ...... just grim.

MarshaMelrose · 09/07/2022 21:33

No thinking necessary here. Loathe it.

TiddyTidTwo · 09/07/2022 21:35

I hated it too. It alway rained and I couldn't stand upright in the tent. Pants

We bought a vintage caravan and it's heaven!

Floraanddougal · 09/07/2022 21:37

Nope not for me. Did it once at a festival never again, glamping all the way now with electricity and proper beds. Can’t grasp why folks want to do it just for fun it’s miserable.

PancakesWithCheese · 09/07/2022 21:38

I hate it. I just want to be warm and dry and not have to walk across a field just to go for a wee. No. Thank you.

Circleblue · 09/07/2022 21:39

Camping - fun between 9am and 9pm.

TruffleShuffles · 09/07/2022 21:39

I hate it, I hate how uncomfortable it is and I hate the trek to the shower block with all your stuff and you always forget something important. There also seems to be something about campers that makes them want to wash up pots and pans at 6am in the morning right next to other peoples tents.

CatSeany · 09/07/2022 21:39

YANBU... I didn't enjoy it either, BUT... I think I could enjoy it with the right amount of money! Expensive tent that I can stand up in, comfy chairs, nice blow up beds with proper bedding, portable loo, nice indoor shower facilities etc. I think some people camp like that. When I went camping I didn't... it was a small tent with outdoor loos and showers complete with bugs and I hated every minute. I threw a little strop in the car when it chucked it down on arrival day.

rookiemere · 09/07/2022 21:39

So I've never been keen the times we've been before, but this time we left 16 year old DS at home and I got my own compartment.

Turns out my main issue was lack of space. Once I sort out the peeing problem, I'll be grand.

I mean I'd much rather stay in a hotel, and we both agreed last time that 2 nights in a row was pretty much our limit, but as a way of having a cheap holiday ( as we have all the gear already as DH does it more frequently with hill walking) it can't be beaten.

Heroicallyl0st · 09/07/2022 21:40

Hate it. Even in the height of summer I get freezing at night and want to wee and get scared of the dark etc! Always wake up grumpy and overtired. Never again!

Ollybob · 09/07/2022 21:40

Ooh I love camping, it's not for everyone though. There's lots of things that can make camping more comfortable and easier, just depends what the issue is.
It's a good way to see the country and beyond on the cheap knee you have your equipment sorted.

Ollybob · 09/07/2022 21:40

Knee? Should say once!

KatharinaRosalie · 09/07/2022 21:40

YANBU it's shit. People will come tell you all you need is to buy beds and tables and bring a fully equipped kitchen and..might as well stay in a nice villa then?

ThettaReddast · 09/07/2022 21:41

Hate tent camping, but we now have a campervan and love it!

ThreeLittleDots · 09/07/2022 21:42

Eurgh. I'll add to all the good points above, waking up at the crack of ass in the blazing boiling hot sunshine and being unable to return to sleep.

babyrocket · 09/07/2022 21:43

YANBU. I'm lucky enough to be able to afford a comfortable home to live in and hotels to stay in. My idea of a holiday is not to pretend I can't.

travelmad · 09/07/2022 21:44

Love love love camping. Just got back from a glorious week away camping - I could have happily stayed there much longer.

LondonWolf · 09/07/2022 21:44

It's fun for a weekend tops. I cannot comprehend the idea of two weeks camping.

Floralnomad · 09/07/2022 21:45

The only time I’ve camped is when I was a cub leader . It never inspired me to try it as an actual holiday / fun thing to do . I can’t stand bugs / insects and on one occasion after escorting a child on a night trip to the loo block I fell over getting back into my tent and cut my knee really badly .

Nik2015 · 09/07/2022 21:45

@alphapie love this. I just don’t get it at all, it’s hard work!

@user1474315215, quite fancy eurocamp, is it in a cabin?

@Floraanddougal, it didn’t even rain this time. But we had a heatwave when we went one time last year and wicked sunshine today… We had a ‘glamping’ tent this time, last year used our own air tent. Not sure is we picked a bad tent, but the bed was uncomfortable and you could hear the neighbouring non-glamping tents talking/partying till 1am which made me resent the price. Not sure if I was just unlucky.

@TiddyTidTwo does the vintage caravan have a loo?

@PancakesWithCheese, I agree regarding the loo (especially late at night), also I don’t want to shower in those grim showers either!

It’s not even particularly cheap now!!!

I like the idea of waking up in the outdoors but past that definitely not for me. I felt dirty all the time, couldn't have a proper number 2, also found it abit boring.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 09/07/2022 21:46

YABU, in the nicest possible way, you’re doing it wrong.

First, don’t camp in the UK, it’s shit.
camp in Europe, preferably Switzerland. Get a tent you can stand up in, doesn’t need to be expensive, just tall,

then get the nicest blow up mattresses you can afford, a good nights Sleep makes everything good.

we just invested In a camping toilet, it sits in the corner of our tent for overnight emergencies only.

we are camping this weekend just outside of Interlaken and it’s amazing. Bring swim suits, mosquito repellent and plenty of suntan lotion. Wine and relax!

I don’t think I’d make it to ‘Europe’ with all the gear, unless I bought a bigger car.
