Anyone else find planes very claustrophobic?

I was on one yesterday and realised how much I hate being squashed up next to strangers (especially if in the middle seat, luckily I had a window seat yesterday)
You can basically only put one arm on an armrest.
A girl next to me was asleep and kept on rolling her head all over the place, moving her legs into my leg area etc.
Just think the limited room is awful.
She got up 3 times for the toilet in a 3 hour flight too and it's just annoying for the person who has to keep standing up.

I'm claustrophobic and I'm fine on a plane if I'm in the aisle seat. I don't like the middle or window unless it's a very short flight.

I get very 'edgy' on a plane. Not at all scared of flying but just unsettled. The enclosed feeling certainly doesn't help. Think it is also cos I can't sleep on a plane so no escape. Long haul is a no no now unless we win the lottery and can fly first class with beds!

Marvellousmadness · 09/07/2022 14:41

No. Nobody does. Why on earth would anyone think planes are claustrophobic

sarcasm detected

Ypu are flying on the wrong planes. If you use a decent airline, it's not so bad and its well worth taking a route with a change to fly business. I love the newer planes have suites. So much nicer. I would rather spend my money on a decent flight.

Spanielservant · 09/07/2022 15:28

Actually first class is usually the same or lesser for seats and more for the privacy of being around people who know how to travel. Arabic airline business for me. I don't even bother to use points to upgrade.

You’ve not got a lot to do on a 3 hour flight so being annoyed at standing up 6 times for loo trips isn’t a big deal. Better for your own circulation to do it. Bit churlish to be bothered about that. Nobody makes you get up so they can go to the loo for fun!

For Europe we drive. I absolutely LOVE Brittany ferries and the Channel Tunnel. I know it takes longer but I’m on an adventure.

I don't suffer from anxiety or panic attacks - except when it comes to flying. We've sort of accepted that for now, we will be holidaying in the UK or northern Europe. I hope I can conquer it.
I'm not worried about crashing but when they're closing that door I want to run. It's not helped by new stories of planes sitting on the tarmac in the heat for hours

I think yabu. Getting up once an hour to let someone out isn't excessive.

following a terrible illness I get terrible panic attacks on planes, I find wim hoff breathing a life saver.

Mercurial123 · 09/07/2022 18:46

That's the "joy" of travelling economy. If you don't like it you need to buy a business class seat. YABU.

devonianBiatch · 09/07/2022 19:45

I feel this on planes. Especially at the end, when the plane stops and everybody unlocks and stands up. I can't raise my head, I have to keep it down and looking at the floor as I get an instant panic attack and it feels like all the air has been sucked out.

More space is possible. You just have to pay for it.

I take dozens of flights each year. Please tell me what ‘suites’ you’ve seen on a short haul aircraft before! Not everyone flies intercontinental all the time…

They’re not the ‘wrong planes’, they’re what’s available…
