What is the point of a deputy?

Surely one of the reasons for having a deputy PM is to stand in when the incumbent is unavailable/had to stand down for not being up to the job?
Not only does the tory party let him stay/cling on for the next few months, Johnson has now decided its appropriate to issue public statements about the suitability of anyone standing to be the next leader.
The caretaker role should be covered by the deputy PM.

The deputy is there incase the PM gets ill with covid or something I think

Well it is Raab, so…

it’s a bit like having to make a choice between being kicked or punched.

Fenella123 · 09/07/2022 12:56

So have I missed something?
Raab winked at someone in Parliament

Johnson

  • lied to fellow MPs
  • was caught receiving oral sex at work (while married to someone else, who was seriously ill at the time)
  • hobnobbed unmonitored with a significant person from an unfriendly foreign state
  • corruption re. his Downing Street accommodation

Basically a nightmare mix of all the worst disgraces of Clinton and Trump.

This goes far beyond "nobody wants you as leader anymore" that normally prompts an ex-GE change of PM. He is a real embarrassment to the country and should no longer be representing us as political head of state. The fact the Tories are not turfing him out of Downing Street right now reflects very badly on their supposed pride in our country.

My initial reaction to the resignation was 'at least he is finally going' - and it's only a few more weeks - but find it outrageous that today "Downing Street" is releasing statements on what it considers the suitability of potential successors.

The only saving grace is that maybe Johson's disapproval may boost a candidate's chances - but he should just shut up and stay out of it.

Be careful what you wish for. Dominic Raab is possibly the stupidest man in the tory party, and there is a fair amount of competition.

The Conservative Party are a shambolic mess. The UK is the most unstable it has been for 100 years. It's going to get much worse. And Mr. Johnson is still our Prime Minister.
