How long do sickness bugs last?!

Thursday night before I went to bed I started feeling off and nauseous.
Anyway, long story short I began throwing up and I had water coming out my back passage. Horrific stomach cramps.
The vomiting went on until the early hours and I also had body aches and a fever.
The diarrhoea continued along with the flu like feeling and slight nausea.
I managed to sleep a little on the sofa last night, as the night before when it was at the peak, I just didn’t sleep as I was up and down all night and in so much pain.

Anyway, I still feel sweaty and a bit nauseous this morning. Went to the loo and my poo is very runny, not like water now, but extremely loose. So much so that I nearly didn’t make it.

Is this normal? I haven’t eaten anything but I’ve been keeping up with my hydration. I’ve also taken paracetamol for the fever.

I was under the impression these things only lasted about 24 hours.

It’s been many years since I’ve had a stomach bug but it lasted days. Once it lasted on and off for a few weeks. Hope you feel better soon

It depends on the bug I’m afraid. We’ve just had a very similar bug go through our house and DD’s school, I don’t think what you’re describing sounds unusual. It lasted a day or so for some but up to a week for others.

If it is a similar bug, there’s been a couple of people caught out by thinking they’re better only for it to start up again briefly.

Keep going with the hydration and try to eat small amounts of plainer foods. You’ll feel worse if your body isn’t getting anything to fuel itself.

If you like marmite, a teaspoon mixed into boiling water makes a great hydration drink.

Is it normal to have a feeling of bruised ribs the day after throwing up ?

I recently had gastro that lasted 2 weeks, I ended up in A & E. Yes, they can last that long

Yes, unfortunately.

Just rest - you'll feel better soon!

You still need to eat if you're having diarrhoea as your body needs the nutrients, sugar and salt. Just really plain things like crackers or bananas and avoid dairy, coffee, fizzy drinks and other irritants. You can also try rehydration sachets like dioralyte especially if you're still vomiting too.

Sore ribs and muscles is common but it should settle down. The most important thing is to not go anywhere until 48 hours after your last sickness/diarrhoea incident as d&v bugs spread so easily and would be a lot less common if people kept their kids at home long enough.

DS recently had similar to this and it lasted for about a week, bad for 2 days felt ok for a day, bad again for 2 days, ok for another day then back for one last hurrah. Took us a good few days of him feeling better until we were brave enough to leave the house with him.

Just before lockdown we all had one that just wouldn't go away, must have been 3 or 4 weeks before it was all over.

neverbeenskiing · 09/07/2022 13:15

Completely depends on the bug. Could be a day or so, could be a couple of weeks. Drink plenty of water and rest as much as you can. You need to avoid mixing with people until 48 hours after your last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea so you don't pass it on.

IME more like a week than 24 hours. I know some people bounce back quick, but me and my kids it seems to take a while
