Following on from other thread. How many couples are in your friendship group are still together but not happy

So… following on from the other thread asking how many of your social circle are still together, I believe there are a huge amount of couples who are together but not really happy, and stay together for numerous reasons. (Financial, kids, scared of being on their own etc). AIBU?

I think it’s really hard to tell and it’s mixed isn’t it, lots of people go up and down. I can think of one that I think aren’t an idea couple at all, maybe two. But I think they think that kind of relationship is normal.

Truthfully, no one has any idea how happy or unhappy other couples are. My parents, for example, were horrendous together. Everyone thought they were the perfect couple - they had parties for every occasion and were the absolute life and soul. Then, when everyone left, they would have a blazing row and throw things and scream at each other. They were very hot and cold - either madly in love or absolute loathing. No one outside the house ever saw anything other than the madly in love side - everyone was shocked they broke up and many still are and tell me how happy they were as a couple.

Some couples share their problems with those around them and some couples hide them - we all have them. If you think a couple aren't happy, it's probably just that the person you're speaking to is more open or more the kind of person who vents their frustration, rather than that they're actually less happy.

According to Relationship Scotland 47% of couples break up. So in any given situation half of couples are unhappy.
