Is Chesterfield nice?

There could be a possibility that DH moves there for work, could anyone tell me the nice areas/areas to avoid around the area. We have no kids and are in our late 20's.

Thank you

I don't know if Chesterfield is nice, but I know there's a possibility THIS forum could help:

It's an absolute shithole. How wide an area around it are you considering?

SellFridges · 07/07/2022 17:48

Chesterfield is fine, I grew up nearby. It’s a small market town, and is similar to many others of its ilk. Good areas and not so nice.

It’s very close to the Peak District and Sheffield should either of those appeal more.

I don’t agree it’s an absolute shithole, however I wouldn’t choose to live there. I have in laws there and we live in Sheffield. I would strongly advise considering south west sheffield which is a 20 min drive away- or looking rurally as it is in the heart of the Peak District and there are many lovely villages within a 20 minute drive.

I think the areas to avoid in and around Chesterfield, are all the areas in, and around, Chesterfield.

I lived there before for a few years yes it’s ok, I’m sure the town may be getting better with some nice bars etc, but I have only been back once since I left about 5years ago. I pretty much always went to Sheffield for meals and food. It depends what you want. There’s lots of lovely countryside nearby it’s close to the peaks if you like walking etc. I moved to Sheffield south side which is closest to chesterfield kept this side because of the ease of being the right side to get to work. Takes about 10/15mins to get to the big Tesco no idea about town as I drive through it. It’s cheaper than Sheffield so depends on your budget really

The twisty church steeple is cool.

ShinyMe · 07/07/2022 18:44

It isn't a shithole, any more than anywhere else. Of course there are rough areas and good areas. I've lived here 22 years and I like it, I don't see myself moving away any time soon. I like that you can get out to the Peak very easily, and get to big cities easily, and the M1 is right there, and you can drive to Manchester or East Midlands airport easily, and I can get most of the things I need here.

Of course there are 'nicer' places, like pretty little Peak District villages, if that's what you want. You'll pay for the price difference though, and there are downsides to living in a pretty little Peak District village, like not being able to park in summer, or being snowed in in winter, and the long drive to get to a supermarket or a cinema. It depends what you want in a town though.

It's a bit rough around the edges but has good amenities and good transport links - train, M1. The roads aren't great, it gets very busy. I used to go clubbing there as a teenager and there was quite a lot of drunken violence at night, Ben Sherman shirts everywhere type place.

I wouldn't choose to live in Chesterfield itself but Holymoorside or Ashover are nice, Baslow isn't far and is lovely, right next to Chatsworth House.

leotardrock · 07/07/2022 19:01

Dronfield is nice! Really quick commute on the train!

warofthemonstertrucks · 07/07/2022 19:11

I grew up there. It's actually very nice-even nicer now. Town centre has been developed. It's nice and near the Peak District which is stunning. It's handy for Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and Manchester ( all within an hour or so's drive). Plenty of lovely villages nearby-try Holymoorside, Barlow, Cuthorpe, and further afield, Baslow, Eyam, Bakewell, Beeley-I'd move back like a shot!

IncompleteSenten · 07/07/2022 19:19

I also grew up in the area.
It was my experience that it was a shithole.

Florenz · 07/07/2022 19:19

Chesterfield is nice, the better areas are Wingerworth, Walton, Upper Newbold, and further out of town, Cutthorpe, Holymoorside.

IncompleteSenten · 07/07/2022 19:20

In one of the nearby pit village shitholes.

warofthemonstertrucks · 07/07/2022 19:20

Add Old Brampton to the nice villages

HermioneWeasley · 07/07/2022 19:20

No. It’s a dump

LidlMiddleLover · 07/07/2022 19:22

Some of it is nice but places like Staveley are dumps

warofthemonstertrucks · 07/07/2022 19:25

It really isn't though-there are loads of nice restaurants now-and the market is pretty and actually quite good. There are some rough bits-like everywhere else.
But generally I'd say it's a nice place to live-and I've always found people there to be lovely-far nicer than my current allegedly lovely bit of the south east

IncompleteSenten · 07/07/2022 19:25

Oh god, I remember the fight I saw in the car park of job lot in staveley. Two women going at it like buggery. it was the first time my husband had witnessed some of the more... interesting behaviours I had been telling him to expect. His face was a picture.
