To say that people suck up to people who have money?

Regardless of whether said 'monied' person is a total arsehole or not.

Someone from my (small. everyone knows everyone) town got married a couple of weeks ago; he is 'wealthy' but it is very very well known that he is a drug dealer and a nasty person, who just gets away with it. He married a much younger woman who also is not pleasant.

The fawning on social media from people who attended the wedding has been both amusing and embarrassing to see. People were acting as though it was on a par with a royal wedding.

I have always found that people do suck up to, and fawn over, anyone that they perceive to be wealthy. I remember years back when DS was at primary school, there was a family who seemed rich, and I remember the kids and the parents not being particularly nice, but they practically had their own fan club!

Honestly? No. I've not found that. 'People' is too broad a term.

I think certain types of people are impressed by 'money' - even if it's arseholes that have it. I don't know anyone in my circle of friends that would fawn over anyone because of their money/status.

I'm also from an area that is fairly blunt speaking and isn't easily impressed by much. Money (on it's own) isn't enough. Money + Arsehole would definitely not go down well. Money + Arsehole + Drug Dealer would get you no wedding guests at all, apart from your family and your dickhead mates in my small home town.

Not in my experience!

Tessasanderson · 06/07/2022 16:34

Absolutely. My friendship circle has gotten smaller and smaller over the years as i have found I cannot put up with such two faced people. They will gossip about XYZ behind their back and in the next breath be all over these people given half the chance.

No, if someone is an arsehole, regardless of them having money, they are still an arsehole. Anyone dealing drugs would be told to stay as far away from me as possible and anyone that associates with them wouldnt be any friend of mine.

Being around people with money seems to be some kind of badge of honour these days. Its pathetic.

SOME people suck up to people with money.

Luckily IME they are a minority and easy to avoid, especially if you don’t have money as they will ignore you Grin

DockOTheBay · 06/07/2022 16:45

Not in my experience.

It sounds like this guy is a nasty piece of work, maybe that's why people fawn over him because it's better than being on his bad side? All the rich people I know are just normal and nice and have normal friends.

Fushiadreams · 06/07/2022 16:46

No never found that op, I have found people can be impressed by wealth but not from drug dealers no. You are on yout own there.

Fushiadreams · 06/07/2022 16:48

I’d also add the flip side is some folks are impressed by money, and some actually are deeply jealous and bitter and dislike anyone with money because they don’t.

most folks are in the middle though and take as they find.

Georgeskitchen · 06/07/2022 17:08

If the guy who got married is a drug dealer people are probably too scared to say anything not nice. I personally don't would say nothing , good or bad if it was a drug dealer

Maybe they genuinely had a great time and they get on. You are not a fan and that is fine. I went to uni same course as a billionaire's daughter, she had her friends but there was no fan club. No one really cared that much in all.

Adversity · 06/07/2022 18:21

I remember being on a short course and there was an absolutely insufferable woman who was boasting so much about her house and other stuff to let people know she had money. I swerved her like she had the plague. So no nit everyone sucks up to those types,
