Pre septal cellulitis…advice!

Hello!

looking for advice here as it’s a busy area of mumsnet. Have also name changed!

my four year old son has had 4 bouts of pre septal cellulitis (cellulitis of the eye) since his first birthday.

im looking to see if anyone has any advice for trying to prevent this. My DH and I are always on high alert for it especially when he’s got the cold as it seems to be his sinus on the left side of his face that causes it.

the first bout of it when he was 1 was awful. Narrowly avoided a hospital admission for IV antibiotics and now we’re super vigilant and get him co amoxiclav straight away along with chloramphenicol or ciloxan eye drops.

waiting on an ENT referral but wondering if there are any parents or doctors out there who might know of preventative measure we could take with him.

Hi
I know you posted this last year but desperate to find out if you found out the cause? My daughter has had it twice in one year and I am just beside myself with worry. I’ve started googling and wish I didn’t.
thanks in advance xxx

Hi!

we saw an ENT consultant in august last year and they were useless.

it tended to flare up after a heavy cold so we assume it was his sinuses causing the infection.

touch wood he hasn’t had it for quite a while now and I hope he’s grown out of it (like we were told he probably would)

my only advice is to be on high alert if your dd has a heavy cold and get the coamoxiclav and chloramphenicol asap.

my doctor was great and I’ve been a couple of times when I thought it might be starting (it didn’t come to anything) and they prescribed the antibiotics just in case. I didn’t cash the prescription before I’m accused of wasting antibiotics!

sorry your dd has experienced this though. It’s really rotten not to mention dangerous!

feel free to drop me a message xx

Ah thank you for replying you didn’t have to but means alot!
Im so pleased to hear it hasn’t returned for a while. So we were seen by a consualant last week and just felt they were no use.
she hasn’t really had a cold when she’s had it which is just making me think what the hell could be causing it.
im just so worried as like you say it just comes on so quickly and gets so poorly. Luckily after 2 episodes now I’m on the ball but just feel like I’m living on an edge abit. Scared to even book a holiday or go away for a few days because im thinking ah what happens if it comes back when we were away.
its just awful. The consultant did say she could be unlucky by getting it twice they’ve done bloods etc. where back there in January to see the consultant xxx
