Did I hit and run?

Lostandlost · 04/07/2022 10:04

I was reversing in the car park (parallel parking back to back )and a man was opening his boot and I slowly revered into the car. He moved aside and got furious. I totally understnd the man's frustation. I was wrong not to see properly.

I got out and kept saying sorry as he was very angry and furious. Many people were watching me ( also probably taking photos etc) but I just wanted to apologise so I kept repeating ' I am really very sorry' to the man although he kept shouting at me. I was actually happy that he was as alright and capable to shout at me. His wife asked him to calm down and after a little while he did.

So then I asked if he and the car were fine. He said they were. I offered my number and name but he wont take it. I asked the wife to take my name and details she did not want them too. They kept saying ' just forget it, careful next time' and I again asked to take my details and the couple said ' dont worry, keep careful next time' and went into the car. I went into mine and drove off.

I then went to online reporting in police station and said that unforturnately I dont have any details of them or their vehicle but I gave all my details. The accident spot, date etc. I got a reference number from the online form. No damage done to any cars nor people ( only emotional I guess to the man, the wife and me)

So is this a hit and run as I did not give them details?. I am assuming one of the spectators will report me. So shall I say that the man was ok not taking my details?
Please help.

Don’t worry. Nothing will happen. You definitely didn’t ‘hit and run’. You’ve done more by reporting it than 99% of people in your situation would do. The man was OK. The car was OK. It was a low-speed car party knock and you don’t need to dwell on it - except for checking carefully next time. Flowers

Gazelda · 04/07/2022 10:09

You didn't hit and run.
You checked all were ok. You offered your details several times.
You reported it promptly to the police and gave a report number.
You can put this out if your mind.

skgnome · 04/07/2022 10:10

you did all you could
most people would not bother reporting it to the police
learn the lesson, be more aware next time and move on

SurpriseSurprise · 04/07/2022 10:12

Hit and run would’ve been if you hadn’t got out of your car and just drove off. Forget about it, it’s just one of those things

Perpop · 04/07/2022 10:20

Don’t give it any more headspace ❤️

Aksbdt · 04/07/2022 10:22

Why would anyone report you? I’m not even sure why you self reported. You certainly didn’t hit and run

phishy · 04/07/2022 10:22

I'm not sure you know what hit and run means Confused

Justcallmebebes · 04/07/2022 10:23

You have nothing to worry about in this instance. It's not actually a hit and run because you've self reported.

No damage to vehicle or others so please put this out of your mind and don't worry any further

GiveMeNovocain · 04/07/2022 10:24

As you haven't hit anyone or run from the scene of the accident you're good

YABU - You didn't hit and run. You stopped, took crap from him, he refused to swap details. Don't think any more on it

Seapoint2002 · 04/07/2022 11:00

Sounds like he doesn't have insurance. That's probably why he was getting so stressed. If you had his numberplate you could have checked.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 04/07/2022 11:01

So not satisfied with driving into his car, because you're on a self-flagellation carousel you've got to stick the knife in by making his premiums go up from an unreported accident if anyone finds out who he was?
God, my car got written off by someone like you. I was REALLY happy my premium went up because someone else didn't look where they were going.

Yes because people who are insured are overjoyed when someone drives into them when they're stationary and they have to get out of the way to avoid being mince.

SofiaSoFar · 04/07/2022 11:06

Did you hit the man?

I guess not, but I wasn't 100% sure from what you posted.

If you did hit him (even slowly) you're right to have reported it because any traffic incident where someone is hit by a vehicle has to be reported.

If you only hit the car then offering your details was all you needed to do.

In either case, you've done all you could and have nothing to worry about.

where does it say the car was damaged and insurance was in cocked?! @PeekabooAtTheZoo you had a bad experience, don't wrap everyone in the same cloth.

Op, no damage, you checked all was ok, and have done far more than many. Don't think about it again.

Shedcity · 04/07/2022 11:10

YABU for being this stressed. Are you always this anxious? I don’t mean that in a rude way but you are obsessing over this and creating scenarios that don’t exist.

you don’t know that people took photos - why would they. Would you? You have invented this part of the story
why would they report it when they could see you both talking
why would you think you hit and run when you got out and offered your details
why would you still try to report it to the police when nothing actually happened and no one cared

you are massively catastrophising this incident
focus instead on being a better driver and not doing this again, you were lucky not to cause damage and that they didn’t want your insurance details, take that win and be more careful next time

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/07/2022 11:10

Sounds to me that you did all your could to try and resolve the situation.

HairyScaryMonster · 04/07/2022 11:13

If there's no damage and witnesses saw you speaking to him, I don't see why you'd think it's h&r.

Norma27 · 04/07/2022 11:17

You will be fine. My car was hit and driver drove off in front of lots of witnesses. Police didn’t care.
You did all you could.

MiniMoosey · 04/07/2022 11:20

I don’t understand why you reported yourself?

collieresponder88 · 04/07/2022 11:21

Forget about it

riotlady · 04/07/2022 11:32

So you obviously haven’t done a hit and run but I am a bit confused about what happened- he was standing at his boot, which you slowly reversed into, so if he hadn’t moved out of the way he would have been crushed?

Lostandlost · 04/07/2022 11:43

Thankyou everyone. I am feeling ok now :). You all so kind Halo

@riotlady .. actaully not sure about where is was exactly standing but he did say ' you could have killed me'.. so guessing he moved when he saw that my car was running into him.

Did you let your insurance know? I think all stuff like this you are supposed to report to your insurance company
