So my lips are constantly tingly and itchy and just annoying me!

Things I've tried - constantly putting on lip thing, think it's a cocoa butter one.

Zovirax - thought a cold sore was coming so have been putting this on the really red spots - 2

Vaseline

Taking anti-histamines

Does anyone have a recommendation for a really good lip moisturiser or a cure?

TIA

Is it an allergy to something. I know you've tried antihistamines but if you're constantly being exposed to the irritant you might need stronger ones. Does it get worse / better at any times? More noticeable after certain food & drink?

Blistex is the only thing that's ever sorted this when I've had it.

HangOnToYourself · 01/07/2022 15:35

You need.to work out what you are allergic to if it's an allergy

Blistex cream

I get this all the time, I’ve finally worked out I’m allergic to a derivative of paprika (not pure paprika as it happens) that’s in a colouring or flavouring.

i take a daily antihistamine, double when it’s bad (mine swell up too). I had success with Lanacane cream during my last flare up, it numbed my lips which offered some relief. The last few times carmex sick has helped. The time before it was Malibu stick and a few months before that it was really cheap lipbalm from the chemist.

one time Zovirax helped, most times it doesn’t. Something that helps in one attack will burn the next one. I have a fabulous collection of lip balm sticks!

good luck, it’s hideous.

Does it happen all the time? I used to get this regularly but only for a few days before my period. Strangest damn symptom. Nothing really cured it but I would exfoliate them with a toothbrush!

cofingalthetime · 01/07/2022 15:43

thanks everyone, maybe I'll try upping my anti histamine dose. I didn't think of it being something in food. I'll try blistex, I used to use it a lot! Any more suggestions keep 'em coming!

I had this and was intolerant to citrus fruit.

Yohohaha · 01/07/2022 15:53

Change your toothpaste maybe? I worked out I was allergic to sensodyne! Also body shop hemp lip balm is the best thing ever!!

jeaux90 · 01/07/2022 16:00

Mild allergies to some fruits are quite common. Does your throat itch at all at the same time?

HardStareBear · 01/07/2022 22:49

It could be the lip balm that you're using. I developed an intolerance to Burt's Bees lip balm and had inadvertently been making it worse because I was using more of the product in an attempt to moisturise my lips. Cut out the balm and see if it makes a difference.

Hi I'm back again! I tried a different toothpaste one morning and I think it slightly helped, nothing drastic though. Lips are all swollen and itchy still. Took an antihistamine last night, and another one this morning as I had to come into work and look like I've been in a boxing ring. I'm wondering how did you all discover what you're allergic to? Like how did you narrow it down?

Sounds like either fruit or your lipbalm. Ypu just have to eliminate 1 thing at a time or eliminate a large number and reintroduce one at a time. I am allergic to cocoa butter so that has give me itchy lips before. My daughter gets it with Kiwi. The only lip balm I can use is Nuxe reve de miel all others either make me itch or give me cold sores!

BlanketsBanned · 08/07/2022 11:12

You narrow it down by process of elimination which is really frustrating. It could be something you are putting on your lips, the pillow, something you eat or drink. Are they swollen all the time or at specific times of the day.

FlamingoDust · 08/07/2022 11:13

If they are that swollen I would try getting rid of the cocoa butter lipbalm first!

What happens if you dont put any balm or cream on your lips. Could a doctor or pharmacist have a look and prescribe something, maybe a steroid cream.
