AIBU - I shouldn’t have to find a way around re: parking

My car has been blocked in again. This time not fully but car is half way across my drive. I’m not very confident at manoeuvring around it as it is very tight, I have the neighbours gate in one side and fixed ornamental lights on the other side. Just been knocking on doors to find out and a man opens door (not his car) and tells me sarcastically that there’s enough room. The thing is why should I have to keep finding a way around and not easily take my car out? I feel anxious even trying as I know I will make a mess of it and it’s a built up street so people will no doubt see me even if not trying to. Why can’t people Lk d not park across my drive. It’s a council dropped kerb and the car is blocking 90% of the dropped kerb.

It’s frustrating but other than reporting it every time there isn’t a lot you can do.

do you reverse on? That will make it easier to get off.

I would be the same as you, if you hit it you would be at fault and that's ridiculously unfair. The guy who said that is a twat

Do you need to take your bins out for the binmen. I found in the past seeing you bashing into their car with the bins, does focus the mind on not making things difficult for you. Lipstick on the windscreen is really annoying as it's impossible to get off without a proper wash, peanut butter also works well with the added bonus it looks a bit like shit. Of course you could leave a polite note on the car which should be your first option . . .

It brings to mind what my dad did years ago. We had a trolley jack so he just went out, jacked the car up, and left it in the middle of the road 😂

Seeline · 29/06/2022 18:56

People are just selfish. I've been anxiously watching the car parked completely across my drive - no way I could get out. And to make matters worse they had boxed DHs car in too which is parked on the road, next to our dropped kerb and behind a neighbour's. It had not left enough room for him to manoeuvre. We've got to go out in 20 mins and it has now left, but that's not the point.

Stop parking on the drive and park across it instead is the only solution I found, other than moving house. People just don’t seem to get it. Pita though. My sympathies.

motogirl · 29/06/2022 19:05

If you call the police they will arrange to get it towed if you need to get out, it won't be fast but i have done this

Not if you can get out, but it’s difficult. Only if you actually can’t.

I like to tell people that I don't mind hitting their cars because mine is crap and old.

crowsfeet57 · 29/06/2022 19:12

When I'm blocked in I sit in my car with my hand on the horn. They usually come out after about 10 minutes.

I get absolutely furious when I'm blocked in. I bought a house with a drive for MY convenience not some CF.

Pay to have an H bar painted across the dropped kerb. It's massively helped.

trevthecat · 29/06/2022 19:20

Report it every single time. If you can't get out without driving over an undropped kerb they will get a ticket. It happens to us a lot in summer, we live in a tourist town. So annoying but I feel better when they get a ticket

I'm surprised no one has said this yet but...

We need a diagram OP!
