Should I ring in sick or go to work wearing a paper bag over my head

I'm old enough to know better but I went to a festival yesterday & completely forgot to out suncream on my face. It was sunny, windy & no that warm that I just forgot.
Now I've a red nose & cheeks & an oversized pair of sunglasses white shape on my face! Make up, of which I don't have a lot, is not going to disguise this. I should ring in sick as I'm so embarrassed 🙈

You can’t call in sick just because you’re a little red faced (although I definitely would! 😂)

KangarooKenny · 27/06/2022 07:32

It will be a talking point, get off to work.

jetadore · 27/06/2022 07:33

Unless it’s so painful you can’t work, then just go. It’ll be character building. Also If ppl you work with know you went to a festival they might think you’re hungover.
And surely makeup will irritate it more? Maybe some type of aftersun/rescue stuff would be better.

lanthanum · 27/06/2022 07:34

Wear the sunglasses to work?
If you work with a limited number of colleagues, hopefully you can just have laugh with them about it and then get on with the day, but I can see it will be tough day if you have to see lots of people.

Last year, my daughter kept her mask on for sports day - but hadn't taken a sunhat, and it was a beautiful day. Fortunately she managed to see the funny side - but it was probably a good thing it was a Friday.

womaninatightspot · 27/06/2022 07:35

I'd go. If you have plain/ natural yoghurt in the fridge slather it on and wait 15 minutes it really takes the heat out of sunburn.

itsthesoundofthepolice · 27/06/2022 07:36

Lots of people will tell you to just go as it's your own mistake etc etc however I would phone in sick and stay home.

I phoned in sick because if a massive cold sore once, this thing was easily the size of a 50p and made my face/lip swell so much, it was really painful too. I took 2days off because I couldn't face the thought of having to explain to everyone what it was!

I’d advise to wash it off before you go to work though

SpellingBeetle · 27/06/2022 07:36

Was just coming to suggest the yogurt too! I hope you aren't too uncomfortable OP.

MargheritaAndMargaritaPlease · 27/06/2022 07:38

If you work in hospitality or similar, I'd just own up and say you look too bad to serve customers?

Or if you work in an office, can you not WFH?

GetThatHelmetOn · 27/06/2022 07:38

unless you plan on not showing for the whole week, I would say that is better to bite the bullet and go today.

Skyeheather · 27/06/2022 07:38

A few years ago I got really drunk, tripped over the rug in front of the fire place and smacked my face on the marble mantlepiece. I woke up the next day with a huge bruise on my face, it looked like somebody had punched me really hard in the eye. I tried my best trying to cover it with make up but couldn't hide it. Then I went into work where I never heard the end of it, nobody would believe that I hadn't been fighting with somebody. This went on all week.

I wish I had thought of phoning in sick! You might need the whole week off though and the sunglasses mark will take ages to fade, I'd invest in some new make too.

TinySaltLick · 27/06/2022 07:38

Absolutely go, it will inject some humour into a Monday morning, be brave it will be fine

SummerPuddings · 27/06/2022 07:39

Can you work from home?

RaisinGhost · 27/06/2022 07:44

Once I had my hair parted in the centre and I got sunburned in the part! It was badly peeling and looked like the worst dandruff in history. For some reason I didn't call in sick but I regret that decision, I should have kept my shame private at home or at least worn a hat to work.

Pottedpalm · 27/06/2022 07:49

Could you go in late and go via a chemist and invest in some cream/make up to camouflage the damage a little. Maybe enlist aid of a make up consultant if it’s a biggish Boots or similar.

AmaryIlis · 27/06/2022 08:09

ISTR being told that spot concealer with a green tinge is the way to go to disguise redness.

Bobbins36 · 27/06/2022 08:11

Feel your pain I did exactly this years ago having fallen asleep in a sunny Glasto Sunday afternoon, work on Monday am. Front it out and have a laugh, everyone will forget by Tuesday! Sending solidarity 🤪

VeganVampire · 27/06/2022 08:17

Brown eyeshadow works well to cover white bits.

Newbieafteradvice · 27/06/2022 08:19

Go for it! Shame the boring b’s that did nothing all weekend! 😜 also…. If you just land up “
sick”
after a festival…. I would say you would be talked about more?!

Twiglets1 · 27/06/2022 08:21

I had conjunctivitis recently and stayed off work for a couple of days when it looked at its worst. When I went back (still a bit red eyed) my manager said she didn’t blame me! We’re all human and if your sunburn makes you feel bad I say take a couple of days off but make another excuse

Roselilly36 · 27/06/2022 08:22

Brazen it out, if your colleagues know you were at a festival yesterday, no way will anyone believe you are sick, and will assume you have the hangover from hell.

comealongponds · 27/06/2022 08:23

YABVU

you can’t phone in sick because of sunburn, that’s ridiculous. Get over yourself.

itsgettingweird · 27/06/2022 08:26

I don't think you can ring in sick with panda eyes. Grin

However you really do need to make sure you're keeping very well hydrated if you've burnt your head and face.

Also it's very likely they know you went to a festival and so won't believe your sick sick - will assume you over did it.

Neverendingmindfuck · 27/06/2022 08:27

Aloe vera is very good for sunburn. Keep it in the fridge.

PerfectlyQuiet · 27/06/2022 08:28

Hope you feel ok. Bad sunburn is awful. I think you have to go in. Hopefully it will calm down soon
