Hi, I am about to move into a city and parking will be nigh on impossible or if not impossible very expensive. I will hardly need a car anyway, as will be near all amenities.

There is a car club in the city and whilst it sounds a great idea, I wondered if anyone here belonged to one so that I could hear the real pros and cons.

The only thing so far that sounds weird to me is that you have to leave at least a 1/4 tank of fuel. So you may have to put at least some petrol in every time you use it as presumably everyone leaves as little as possible!

I would love to hear from people who belong to a car club like this.

We used one for years and it was great. Had absolute no issue getting a car and no issue with petrol either.
There was always plenty in the car, and it’s not like you’d pay for the petrol with your card or anything - you use their card to purchase petrol
so if you need to pop to the garage then you just fill the tank up.

And you are only actually charged for the mileage that YOU have used during the time you had the car.

How often do you think you will use a car? It might end up being cheaper just to take taxis.

We use a car club - same system as above, there is a card in each car to pay for fuel. Works really well, you can book cars in advance and then cancel the night before if you don't need them. Highly recommend for not having to search for a parking space and the variable costs of maintaing a car. In our city you also get free parking for the car club cars (as in when you take them out, they each have their own space that they go back to at the end of the season)

Oh thank you everyone! So good to hear from people who have actually done it.

Oh that sounds good re the fuel! I thought it was a bit strange.

I am definitely going to consider this. I have just added up how much it costs me to run my car and it is eye watering.

They are great! Been using one for years. The really good thing is the variety of vehicles you can use. Sometimes I'll use a little city car for just me, a bigger one for family and longer trips, or even a transit van for big loads!

Plus no worries about maintenance, tax, insurance etc.

We had no issues whatsoever with car club and found it perfect for our needs. I never had to fill the tank in all the times I used it, but if you did you just used the fuel card in the car.

Which car clubs do you all use? My parents are looking at getti g rid of their car but still want the option for holidays etc. This would be ideal!

AquaticSewingMachine · 25/06/2022 11:31

We used Zipcar when we did it.

We use Enterprise car club. We live in Edinburgh but have used cars in other cities when we are on holiday.
