What age alone in hot tub?

So what age do you think it’s ok for a child to be in a hot tub in the garden alone?

Not with other friends, just alone while an adult is in the house.

Child is 12 a good swimmer and the tub isn’t very warm as it’s summer.

Is it unreasonable for me to expect the child to be supervised by the adult at least being in the garden? Or are they old enough now to be alone?

At 12, assuming they are NT, they are able to reason that they're too hot and get out. They don't need to be closely supervised.

DavinaRavina · 24/06/2022 10:17

I'd maybe pop in and out, but wouldn't think a 12yo would need full supervision in a hot tub. Wouldn't leave them out there for hours though.

you think a 12 year old needs supervising?

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/06/2022 10:21

I think you’re over thinking this

Northernsoullover · 24/06/2022 10:22

This is anecdata but I heard of an 11 Yr old drowning in a hot tub because their hair got sucked into a filter.

Shoxfordian · 24/06/2022 10:22

At 12 I would assume they’d be fine

could happen at any age then so by the theory no one should ever be left alone in one

HorribleHerstory · 24/06/2022 10:23

Why would a 12 year old need supervising, what is your concern?

they can swim alone from 8, so I’d be saying about 8, through in reality it would be a sliding scale of full supervision for a little one of course and gradually less up to none, not just abandoning them overnight on their 8th birthday

JustRestingMyEyesForAMinute · 24/06/2022 10:23

At 12 I wouldn't be directly supervising, no.

Swimming alone isn’t really recommended at any age.

Like all things it depends on the 12 year old.

but generally yes, a 12 year old who lives in a house with a hot tub, has used it many times before, understands the safety rules and is otherwise NT I would expect them to use it unsupervised.

A 12 year old with adhd or poor impulse control who has never been in one before with really long hair and no sense of danger obviously not…

10HailMarys · 24/06/2022 11:32

It's fine. Presumably you let your 12-year-old have baths unsupervised. They must be capable of sitting in hot water unaided.
Assuming the kid knows where the filter is and is aware they should not remove the screen and poke body parts into it, they do not need to be watched.

If people are worried about their child's hair being caught in the filter, the solution to that is simply getting the child to tie their hair up.

I'm amused at the 'good swimmer' thing. It's hot tub, not Lake Windermere. If the child needs to get out of the water they can simply stand up. They won't need to perform a strong front-crawl to reach the shore.

Your meant to to go in a hot tub alone at all according to the manufacturer

Happyplace88 · 24/06/2022 22:29

12?! Absolutely fine unsupervised.

BreadInCaptivity · 24/06/2022 22:36

I wouldn't recommend an adult alone in a hot tub never mind a child.

As a pp posted, getting hair sucked into the filter and drowning is a real risk as is overheating.

Sorry to be boring but I wouldn't even go in one myself alone.
