Can endometriosis cause spotting before a period?

13 replies

ihateendometriosis · 22/06/2022 22:43

Hi all,

I have brown spotting every month 5-7 days before my period begins. My period is of a 'normal' flow - not overly heavy.

I have untreated endometriosis - is this what is causing it?

I also have had extreme stress over the last few years followed by disordered eating so unsure if this is endo/stress or whatever!!

Any advice would be amazing!! Xx

Helllo, yes it can. My endo caused me to brown spot about 3 days before my period each month.

@Summerdayzhaze

Thank you for replying.
I'm a bit worried as mine is longer at 5-7 days. But as I said, I'm unsure if mine is made worse by my extreme stress/disordered eating. You hear so much online about how your period can be affected by all sorts!! Xx

It can do but I wouldn't automatically that assumption.

When I had irregular bleeding I was sent for scans - they showed nothing but I'm glad my GP took me seriously and explored every option.

Really? What would you assume it is?? X

Yes endo can cause this, but any new change in bleeding you really need to tell your GP.

Unusual mid-cycle bleeding can be a sign of cancer.

Of course, it's far more likely to be a number of other things - endo, fibroids, a hormonal imbalance, stress, poor diet etc, but please get it checked and don't just assume it's a symptom of your endo :)

ihateendometriosis · 23/06/2022 13:41

Thanks ladies.

I've had this for 3 years - since I had a car crash which started a loop of extreme stress and terrible life events, so I've always related it to stress!

Im up to date with smears too which are clear.

I do have confirmed endo that I'm awaiting a laparoscopy for.

The spotting is only ever in the week before my period - no spotting or bleeding at other times in my cycle, after sex etc. x

I would still mention it to your GP - even if your smears are clear it could be something like fibroids or a hormonal imbalance that could be solved with medication :)

@coffeecupsandfairylights

Thank you, I definitely will.

My main thought is that it is low progesterone... xx

This is really interesting, I have something similar plus a lot of pain when ovulating. How did you get your endo diagnosis OP? I was told my ovulation pain was due to having a csection but I've never been 100% convinced.

ihateendometriosis · 23/06/2022 15:14

@LivingDeadGirlUK

I have barely any pain with my endo or ovulation. When I do get period pain it's manageable.

In the past I have had bad pain due to the endo but it's now levelled out hugely. Unsure if this is good or bad!! It's just this irritating spotting that's panicking me as I'm ttc.

I was diagnosed via mri as I had a non-ovarian chocolate cyst that was removed. X

Hi Ladies, how is everyone getting on?

Just a brief background. I had a MMC at 17 weeks in feb 2021 and haven’t been able to conceive since after no issues before. Since last July I get brown spotting before every period 7 days before so from 7 days past ovulation. Lasts a whole week then a pretty light period - although the texture has changes compared to my flow pre loss . Sorry for TMI. Anyway after lots of back and fourth to my GP and nothing I went private and I now have progesterone pessaries from 2 dpo. I’ve done this for 3 months now and it’s completely stopped the spotting however I still haven’t got pregnant. I’ve no symptoms of endo. So I’m just not sure what’s causing the low progesterone and spotting but it’s bothering me a lot.

xx

I know I’ve already wrote but is there any update. I’m feeling so deflated with the brown spotting when TTC.
