Hand Foot & Mouth (pics included)

Help!!

on holiday in Wales (5 hours from home) and DD3 has the most horrific case of Hand Foot & Mouth - except all of the pustules from her hands & feet are in her mouth. Her mouth & tongue is absolutely covered in the most awful ulcers (HF&M was confirmed by the hospital yesterday - I didn’t just rock up the lovely local GP sent us straight to the paediatric ward as she also had a raging temperature)

We’re giving regular calpol & nurofen, the hospital gave us difflam spray and we’re also using ambesol gel.

I know it’s viral so no medication as such but so you have any advice/foods that helped your little ones? She is struggling so much to eat as she’s in so much pain. So far she’s managing squeezy yogurts, weetabix and a bit of bread. Just about to send DH out for ice pops & watermelon sticks.

DD came down with this 2nd day into our 2 week holiday. I also have another DD3 as they are twins. I’m terrified of her also catching this so we’re all washing hands/ using gel regularly.

pics included just to show how bad the ulcers are, these are not just isolated to her tongue, they are on the roof of her mouth, the sides and underneath her tongue 😩😩

Poor thing. That looks horrific. Can she have jelly pots and ice cream? I hope that she feels better soon.

I'd try smoothies or custard/ambrosia rice? Other than that just concentrate on her getting fluids in.
Poor pet!

I had it like this when I caught HFM from DD. Genuinely one of the most painful things I've ever experienced.

There's a ointment thing called Iglu that forms a little shield over the ulcers. I found that helped a bit.

It was bad for 3/4 days and then did heal fairly rapidly after that, but I really sympathise.

How awful! My dc had it early this year and my dh who is in his 50s caught it, and he was so poorly with it!
Plenty of drinks, ice lollies and keep up with the medication, hope it passes soon.

It's agony. Poor little mites. Me and Dd found it more painful than any tonsillitis we have ever had, we just lived on ice lollies. No help op, but my sympathy!

This is brilliant you can also get a gel too. Safe to swallow aswell for little ones. It's been a life saver when I've had awful ulcers.

Just a little update, I took DD back to the hospital 2 days later (we had open access) as the ulcers had just exploded. Turns out it’s not hand foot & mouth but oral herpes 😩

I’m so upset for her, she’s so so poorly, the cold sores are everywhere. She struggles to talk never mind eat. But we now have anti viral cream and corsodyl get to reduce the swelling.

Oh how awful, poor thing. I second Iglu but don't know of that's appropriate with new diagnosis.

How is your little girl doing now? I hope that she's feeling better.

She’s getting there thank you for asking. It’s really knocked her and she’s lost nearly a kilo in weight (she only weighed 10.8kg before she was poorly so she really didn’t have weight to lose 😞)The lesions haven’t totally gone but they are well on the way now.
