I dont like Russell Brand, friends who know him through work say he can blow hot and cold and arent fans.

Just watched Death on the Nile and he was really good in it! I am so cross!

Tell me that I am not the only one who gets annoyed when a celeb they dont like are actually really good in something?!

Oh yes, how Catherine Tate was a revelation as Donna Noble, companion to Doctor 10.

MaturingLikeCheese · 20/06/2022 23:49

I found him really wooden in it!

I love poirot and he spoiled it for me

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/06/2022 00:03

He was wooden but that was kind of the point, he was being all buttoned up and dignified at first the marriage and then the death of a woman he loved. Also, he was brought up in the aristocracy so for the time it would have been exactly how he would have behaved.

Catherine Tate......she was amazing as Donna Noble but absolutely fucking AWFUL in Much Ado About Nothing with David Tennant. As a supposedly trained Shakespearean actress all she did was shout! Emma Thompson in Ken Branagh's version was infinitely better.

He was one of the best in it. Which says it all…

BitOutOfPractice · 21/06/2022 00:07

I loathe chris Martin and Coldplay. Then I’m every interview you ever see he seems like a really nice bloke. Oh god it gives me the RAGE!

Changechangychange · 21/06/2022 00:17

God I have so many music ones. Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River”. Thought he was a massive twat before and after, but it’s a really great song.

I really wanted to hate Lady Gaga when she first came out (and her first couple of tracks were completely terrible). Then she did Bad Romance and Pokerface and I had to admit she was really good. Luckily she has turned into a serious artiste now, and I can go back to thinking she’s really up herself.

Kanye’s basically made an entire career out of this, hasn’t he? Personally obnoxious but musically a genius?

starshineangelxx · 21/06/2022 00:55

Rylan, I absolutely disliked him but he changed my mind when he was on Masterchef

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/06/2022 01:02

Oh no...Rylan?!

I had no feelings either way on him until I saw Masterchef and now he is in my top ten "Most annoying arseholes in the entire world". I love listening to R2 but I never listen on a Satruday afternoon as he is on! Also never between 12 and 2 in the week because JV is basically the Daily Mail on the radio!

YABU - the whole film was rubbish. The Peter Ustinov version is so, so much better.

Americano75 · 21/06/2022 08:17

The original Ustinov version is definitely better but I also loved this version. Russell Brand was really good, but then it's a cracking ensemble.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 21/06/2022 08:34

Jared Leto is like this for me, most reports indicate that he is hard work to be around but he's always mesmerising and intense on screen.

ReneBumsWombats · 21/06/2022 08:36

It was a rather crap film though, so take comfort in that.

Discovereads · 21/06/2022 08:37

Russell Brand did ok in the recent Death on the Nile, but the film as a whole was far longer than it needed to be and poorly done. I was pretty disappointed in it tbh. The original Ustinov film was far better.

Jude Law is a very good actor. So is Tom Cruise. Not so successful at playing human beings.

I was going to mention Tom Cruise. He's an exceptional individual, focused, determined, excels at so much. He did a thing with the F1 peeps at channel 4 recently and they told him that he has enough talent to have been an F1 driver. So much to admire.

Yet I find him insufferable.

PostcodeJack · 21/06/2022 08:54

I feel the same about Russell Brand and always get irked by how much I like him in films. I also felt annoyed when I watched Ricky Gervais' stand up and thought he was hilarious. When I watched a second of his shows and enjoyed that too I just felt shame

MissyB1 · 21/06/2022 08:55

Tom Cruise, clearly such a weirdo in real life - but great actor. How annoying!

SydneyCarton · 21/06/2022 08:57

I also can’t stand Tom Cruise but he is very funny in Tropic Thunder, especially his final scene 🤣

butterpuffed · 21/06/2022 09:07

Not an actor, but Richard Madeley has always made me seethe whenever he's on. Then I saw him in I'm a Celeb and he was so nice and caring to everyone. I hated liking him GRRRRRR !!

Now he's on Good morning Britain and being self righteous , I can seethe again !

CredibilityProblem · 21/06/2022 09:18

Yes there's a difference between people whose previous stuff you didn't like suddenly being great like Catherine Tate in Dr Who, which is basically a good thing, and people who you actively resent being so good. Russell Brand was also brilliant in the Minions movies - it's only a supporting role but he's unidentifiable.

I'm doing a Tom Cruise binge at the moment - DH keeps complaining that it'll turn me into a Scientologist, but he's just irresistible.

On a lower level of stardom the awful Anthony Cotton keeps turning up on competitive reality shows clearly having prepped heavily for ages before hand and being really really good at pottery or whatever and doing the world's least convincing "golly gosh, I thought I'd be awful and it turns out I'm a professional level X" act. He can fuck off.

Dozycuntlaters · 21/06/2022 09:40

It made me cross too watching it but for other reasons. They have mucked about with the characters, tried to make it a bit sexier and edgier, which is not Agatha Christie at all. The original is one of my favourite films, they really didn't need to remake it. I don't really like KB as Poirot either.

ReneBumsWombats · 21/06/2022 09:50

I think it's brave for anyone to try to do Poirot after David Suchet. I don't like to say nobody should ever try a fresh take but damn, those are some big, and fastidiously kept, boots to fill.

Magicpaintbrush · 21/06/2022 09:50

I hated Death on the Nile, but not because of Russell Brand - I just thought it was a pile of absolute horse shit. I am a fan of Agatha Christie/Poirot and I thought they made a total cluster fuck of that movie. Kenneth Branagh is terrible as Poirot, with his acting you can almost see the strings. They must have filmed it during the pandemic when travel wasn't an option because a lot of the locations in Egypt were clearly filmed with actors on blue screen and the background added in later, it was really poor. Nobody can out shine David Suchet as Poirot, they just can't, so better not to even try frankly.

viques · 21/06/2022 09:59

Sean Penn, I always assumed that any one dumb enough to marry Madonna must be crap at acting ( I know, I majored in judgementalism at University) but he isn’t.

TomHanks, always loathed him in those silly roles, the mermaid one, Forest Gump, Big, the stowaway one, and the romcoms, but have to admit that now he does proper grown up acting he is damn fine.
