one of my ds classmate glasses have broken after he slide tackled him while playing football at break time at school. My first reaction is to message mum and offer to pay for a new pair. Apart from it being the right thing this the norm?? None of my dc wear glasses so I don’t know about costs?

Kids get free glasses, so don't worry about it. My DC has had his glasses broken so many times in primary school. Its just part of glasses wearing as a child.

If they are nhs glasses they will be replaced for free. I would offer to pay towards them Incase they are not. Ds had ones not fully covered by nhs that we paid a top up towards

I wouldn’t in that situation (assuming they weren’t free). DS took someone’s water bottle off them and threw it once and I insisted he pay for the replacement as it was deliberate, despite the other mum saying it was OK.
If he had accidentally knocked it or similar I wouldn’t have paid

Don't assume they were free. I have paid up to £40 for kids glasses. A kid in my son's class threw his glasses at the wall and broke them. His parents both have my number but said nothing. They were a lovely pair of glasses, I'd paid £10 for them. I wouldn't have made them pay but I did expect an apology and an offer to pay for them.
