To be pissed off at this

So I have just had a meeting with my manager about career progression and he said he doesn’t really see me as a manager, more customer based. Should I be offended by this? What does he mean?

He means he can't see the qualities in you that he thinks a manager should have.

passport123 · 20/06/2022 14:58

The constructive way to deal with this is to ask what managerial qualities he thinks you don't have, and how you can work on that.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 20/06/2022 15:02

What does he mean?

He means you should have been more forthcoming and ask what he means while you were there, instead you fumed and asked Mumsnet.

Do You think he has a point?

SomePosters · 20/06/2022 15:04

Id start looking at other options tbh

Spot on!

OP, you really are asking the wrong people here. Ask the person who said it.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 20/06/2022 15:07

I wish more managers would have these conversations, instead of shying away and promoting people to be kind, then letting them loose on live test subjects.

Sirzy · 20/06/2022 15:08

To be honest the fact you didn’t think to ask him at the time what he meant and how you could develop suggests he is probably right!

Hmm30 · 20/06/2022 15:12

But is that a bad thing? I don’t want to be a manager, I know exactly what he means, it doesn’t mean I can’t have a good career though does it? There are other avenues?

OP posts:
SpaceJamtart · 20/06/2022 15:20

It depends what job you are in, if you are working in retail, the only progression from a customer assisstant might be managing the other customer assistants?

Why are you asking if you should be offended by sometime your manager has said, when it describes what you want?

Imogensmumma · 20/06/2022 15:23

If you don’t want to be a manager what’s the problem? He has said you won’t suit and you don’t want to do it?!?!

So ask what other career programs you can do don’t whinge online

Ponderingwindow · 20/06/2022 15:24

At my company, being a manager means dealing with personnel issues more than anything. The people suited to that position have a particular set of skills. If someone said they didn’t see me as a manager, it wouldn’t upset me at all. There are other senior roles that don’t require people skills and I went in that direction.

Well, that sounds fine then. You don't want to be a manager, and he's not going to try to send you that route.

I've had a long and productive career rejecting any hint of being a manager! Knowing your own skills and aspirations is a good thing.
So... if you have a chance to revisit the conversation, say you're glad he said that, and what options are there to progress your career in customer-facing roles or suchlike.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 20/06/2022 15:26

He doesn’t see you as a manager. You don’t want to be one. Happy days.

He didn’t say anything negative and there is nothing stopping you having a good career in a customer based position.

I’m not sure what there is to be offended at.

Hmm30 · 20/06/2022 15:28

I am in facilities management so there are lots of other avenues, it is ok that I don’t want to manage people/don’t think I would be good at its

Yes, I suppose I just didn’t like the thought of him saying he doesn’t see me as a manager, although I don’t even want to be one 🙄😂

Meraas · 20/06/2022 15:35

You can and should manage others.

Look for a job and consider why you think you can’d do these things,

This is like the opposite of the Groucho Club. You want a club you don't want to be part of to want you. Umm save the headspace.

Hmm30 · 20/06/2022 17:01

Yes you are right, I should be pissed off if it is not even what I want!

OP posts:
comealongponds · 20/06/2022 17:03

sounds like you’re just looking for a reason to be offended if you have no desire to be a manager in the first place!
