I wfh and through the pandemic fell into the habit of drinking quite a bit of red wine. Prior to this I was a very infrequent drinker and preferred gin and tonic/whiskey and coke.
During that time I gained a stone. I am ashamed to admit that I was probably necking 1/2 a bottle per night or a full one every two days
Around 9 months ago I just grew tired of it and stopped. I still have a glass or two (max) of something else per week but have generally lost my taste for alcohol. In that time I have not altered my food intake, although I did begin to scoff more cheese after giving it up.
Weighed myself last week for the first time since and have lost the entire stone I had put on during 2020. I am just as active as I was during lockdowns (do yoga, pilates and bit of light running) so can't blame the loss on that.
I am going to presume the wine had increased my weight and giving it up lost it again. I had no idea wine was quite as calorific as that! - I am the kind of idiot who never considered alcohol calories, although DP had been telling me all along my gain was from the habit (he also dropped a bit after slowing down). My health check is up to date and no issues. I was glad of a calmer and clearer head after quitting, but wasn't expecting a surprise bonus!
Was I drinking particularly sugary Malbec's ? I only know one other person with a frequent drink habit who never gains weight, although he drinks only Whiskey. Does wine have a different effect on metabolism?
