to hate pigeons

They are making my life a misery!

I live semi-rural, and pigeons are taking over. Their coo-ing is waking me every day from 5am or earlier. It's oud, constant and coming from all directions.

Hence up almost 2 hours earlier today than normal. (We are retired and get up around 7am usually.)

They are on my roof, garage roof, neighbours roofs, nesting in the big shrubs in my garden, sitting on my garden fences all day, and crapping all over my flower beds, patio and garden seats.

They have decimated a honeysuckle in the garden, eating it, and even after I covered it with netting, they still sit there pecking whatever they can.

I hate the bloody things.

I quite like them, but I sleep with earplugs in. Maybe they would annoy me too if I weren't, who knows.

StarCrushedPineapple · 17/06/2022 15:21

Aww I'm grudgingly fond of the noisy little bastards, flapping noisily around the garden, knocking moss off the roof and crapping on every square inch of outside space so I keep stepping in it.

I do love the wildlife and the pigeony wankers are part of of it, but dear God I wish they'd stop shagging at all hours of the day in the apple tree. It just showers the garden in feathers, get a room.

Where I live it is wood pigeons. They make a lot of noise and start at dawn. It can be really really loud. Now we have feral pigeons too because people put handfuls of grain out for them. I can see them on neighbouring roofs. I wouldn't want them on my roof because of the smell of their droppings.

They are horrible dirty things, the only birds I don't like

hellcatspangle · 25/06/2022 07:51

There are definitely more pigeons around here than previous years though. I've never been woken (and very annoyed) by mad flapping at dawn before.

We seem to have a gang of 4 who are just jumping/flapping/presumably shagging all over the fence every single day and it's doing my head in, every day I'm Googling "effective pigeon deterrent" but can't find anything that has good enough reviews to warrant the price!

If anyone has found something that works please tell!

MrsDamonSalvatore · 25/06/2022 07:58

I actually do like pigeons, but totally get where you’re coming from on the noise. In my previous house they used to sit on the satellite dish right by my bedroom window and coo loudly at the crack of dawn. I got sick of opening the window at 4.30am to scare them off, only for them to fly back and start cooing again 10 minutes later.

You live rural but resent the noise of birds in the morning. Righty-oh.

Maybe you would too if you were losing 2 hours sleep day after day!

It's no different to road noise, dogs barking, cats screeching...

How is that ridiculous?

Wax ear plugs are your friend here. Works a treat.

The garden adjoining the bottom of our garden has had a pair for years, in 2 very loose ferny leaved type conifers, which look very unsuitable for a home. They nest there but obviously consider our larger garden to be their estate. I've always loved them, but very unusually, my patio has become absolutely covered in piles of shit. I'm losing the love very quickly, and desperate for a solution. I'm wondering if it is because the neighbour now has a puppy. Our dog died 2 years ago. If anyone knows a humane solution to my issue please share.

Just pigeons who in your view don't pass the hygiene test but all other OK? Weird.

I actually don't live rurally, I live on a small housing estate and they annoy the fuck out of me. I don't object to birds tweeting or cooing, but I do object to them flapping loudly all over my fence every morning at the crack of dawn.

You cant hate pigeons for being pigeons. Live in a town and you have to put up with people. Live rural and you have to put up with nature.

Birds can't exactly be a surprise surely?

And I say this as someone who not only has several pigeons visitors. I live near a popular dog walking venue so always hearing dogs barking. And at night theres the foxes barking or hedgehogs shagginh etc

The waY we are destroying every green space these days, I actually dread the day I hear nothing. It means we have destroyed and killed everything.

Exactly.

I have a flock of pigeons visiting & they amuse me with their antics.

I love them <3. They're monogamous and mate for life. If you look up pigeons and what they achieved during war time it's amazing. The way they find their way to places is phenomenal. I find the noise coo coo really soothing. My little friends.

Same here!

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/06/2022 08:30

If you choose to live rurally, natural sounds are to be expected, surely?

I love pigeons, find their calls very soothing.
