Squats for Bus Tickets

OrangeBagel · 16/06/2022 18:55

In Cluj, Romania, you can pay for your bus ticket by doing 20 squats in 2 minutes. The ticket machine counts them and then issues a free ticket on completion. Disabled people and the elderly ride free.

AIBU to want to see that introduced here?

Why?

worraliberty · 16/06/2022 19:03

Well you haven't said why you'd like it introduced here?

Is there any evidence this has had a positive impact in Romania?

Why?

Because I can do 20 squats in 2 minutes and quite fancy free bus tickets.

It would take ages for the bus to leave though wouldn't it? Sounds quite barking.

JustTheOneSwan · 16/06/2022 19:08

I can't do a single squat but if I attempted one I reckon I'd get a free sympathy/entertainment ticket.
I would back this.

The squats are done in front of the ticket machine (with a sensor), not in front of a very patient bus driver! 😁

LookAtMyCircumstance · 16/06/2022 19:11

It's over a fiver return fare to the next town here. That's a lot of squats.

RaininSummer · 17/06/2022 18:04

Ah well thanks for the clarication. I was picturing my number 25 at 5.15 witth a line of 8 people limbering up ready to do their 2 minutes before the driver handed over their ticket.

I’m studying public health measures at the moment and I think it’s pretty great

anyone fit enough can ‘earn’ free travel by doing a quick cardio. Anyone not for enough gets free travel

its a bold try and I wish them well

carefullycourageous · 17/06/2022 18:10

Buses in England are so bloody expensive I would try it!

I just feel jealous of so many European countries, with decent and cheap public transport. Tory Britain is costing me a fortune!

actiongirl1978 · 17/06/2022 18:14

What an awesome idea. I'm in. I can do 20 squats in about 30 seconds so I'm quids in 😝

Fitterbyfifty · 17/06/2022 18:14

No thanks my knees couldn't cope! I do have a subsidised annual bus pass from work though and children under 14 don't pay either.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 17/06/2022 18:16

Who is going to make sure my toddler doesn’t run off while I do such squats?

skinnythick · 17/06/2022 18:17

I’d be pretty annoyed about the fact that I’m not disabled but have a medical condition that means me attempting 20 squats in 2 minutes would be stupid and difficult. I don’t get a disabled bus pass where I live (nor do I want one). I’m sure there are plenty of inbetweeners like me

Jott · 17/06/2022 18:18

I have a dodgy knee that dislocated itself so can't do squats but I'm not disabled so won't qualify for a free ticket. I could get DC1 to do my squats by proxy?

£6-fucking-90 return here.

EarringsandLipstick · 17/06/2022 18:18

This is a bit crackers but I love it!

DangerNoodles · 17/06/2022 18:28

If they afford to provide free bus travel then they should just provide it, rather than patronise people who are just going about thier business.

I use the bus to get to work, I would be pissed off if I had to pay to save myself the embarrassment of doing squats in front of people, plus the delay.

DangerNoodles · 17/06/2022 18:29

*If they can afford

😂 Good answer.

Pregnant women should also ride free though.

That would be you and obviously if you can't, then you couldn't get your free ticket.

NauseousNancy · 17/06/2022 19:43

Who would pay for the ticket?

Mine likes me to hold her while I'm doing squats Grin I feel like Milo and the bull.

Motnight · 17/06/2022 19:49

The more free tickets offered, the more paying passengers have to fork out.

worraliberty · 17/06/2022 19:54

It was only for 2 weeks in Romania anyway and was funded by some health/sports body.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/06/2022 19:55

If you are good at squats there, can you do squats for other people to earn tickets for them? They could then pay you half the price of a bus ticket.
