To think sertraline has made me gain 2 stone in weight

I have been on sertraline for over 2 years. Before starting I was very slim and 7 stone. My weight has remained the same for 30 years. I am now 9 stone and as I’m only 5 ft and I’m too heavy. Sertraline helps me enormously but I’m beginning to loath my flabby body. I exercise most days. My GP says it’s not sertraline.

I had a similar experience. In my case it definitely wasn’t magic, ie, it wasn’t that the sertraline itself just put on the weight. Instead it made me feel always slightly nauseous and craving carbs, so I slowly ate more. I was able to lose the weight once I came off it.

I had a simulate experience with a different AD plus I was on Beta Blockers. I came off them as I hate being fat.

It's well known that antidepressants often cause weight gain. It's not the tablets in themselves, it's the changes they make to your attitudes and thoughts that lead you to consume more/spend fewer calories.

It makes sense, if you're a bag of nerves all the time it's harder to eat and harder to digest what you do eat. So you consume fewer calories, but at the same time your edginess led you to burn more.

Sertraline made me gain weight. It was 100% the tablets and not my appetite or what I was eating. I am thankful that they saved me from my anxiety and such dark depression but they absolutely wrecked my body.

Yup, gained a lot. It was NOT consuming more calories. Came off them and lost 2 stone without trying. They are marvellous drugs but yeah, it's a thing.

I lost a stone after I went back on them. I tried coming off to see if made a difference but actually good food, exercise and thinking about why and when I eat made much more of a difference.
