To ask about periodontal surgery?

Despite my best efforts, and those of my dentist and hygienist, I have severe gum disease and several very loose teeth.
My dentist has referred me to a specialist periodontist, and I'm due to see him next week.
There were limited places available on NHS, so I'm paying for this, as the alternative seems to be losing my teeth.
Has anyone had anything like this, and did treatment help?
I think there's some surgery that strengthens the teeth in the gums; how is the recovery from this?
I'm feeling nervous, both about the treatment and the potential cost!

Op did you go ahead with this? What were the results like?

I had root planing where you have numbing injections and they scrape under your gums. Sounds awful but really isn’t bad at all. I had it done in 4 stages, 1/4 at each appointment. I really think it has helped.
they advised using tepe brushes and an electric toothbrush.

I have terrible dental phobia and have just plucked up the courage to book a hygienist appointment after 18months of not seeing anyone. The last time I went they said I had gum disease and I've just noticed today the recession on my top gum. I feel so sick with worry I can't sleep. Did your wobbly teeth fall out? Thank you for taking the time to reply

I had root planing too. It helped my condition but teeth still uncomfortable a lot of the time. But pockets improved and it's only a few I have problems with now.

I had dental phobia too, hence the previous neglect that went on to cause problems. If you need difficult procedures you can ask for anxiety meds. I took them and it took the edge off my fears.
