UK Government should scrap/substantially lower VAT on fuel/petrol and household energy bills asap

Just that - why aren’t they doing it if they are free to do so post Brexit? If the harm to the economy is greater than the money they are making wouldn’t that make more sense? Or are they so desperate for that VAT into government coffers because their own loan repayments are going to be so dire? I just don’t get it… We need to get this economy moving.
I also support a windfall tax on energy companies but I am worried about the smaller energy companies and how that would work, because these things are complex.

In short the Tories, you know the party of fiscal responsibility and a strong economy, have fucked things up so badly they can't afford to do anything to help that wouldn't severely impact on the rich (so they won't do anything).

Parliament rejected a petition in May to reduce VAT on fuel by 40% for a variety of reasons that pretty much confirmed the above. My favourite being the £50 billion worth of vat relief requests since brexit has caused a bit of a hole in the coffers that all those amazing benefits have somehow not managed to fill.

YANBU. VAT and green levies make up almost 50% of petrol bills. These could be removed or reduced in an instant but it is easier to blame Russia for everything when most of the issues to do with the cost of living are firmly down to the Government (printing huge amounts of money, massively increasing inflation and not protecting the infrastructure of this country - making the UK very reliant on importing everything from abroad).

They have had years to increase production and to solve the problem of storage capacity but have instead decided to close down power stations, close down storage capacity and rely on very unreliable wind power. They are either imbeciles or very evil (or both).
