Facebook begging request

Why does this annoy me? A Facebook friend (not a close one) has appealed, twice, for money to pay for an operation for her daughter's dog. Her dd is only 21 and still at Uni but lives away from home with an older man (and I assume he must have plenty of money as he's paying rent on or owns a London flat). They have a pedigree dog, a breed with very well known significant health issues, and now the dog needs an operation.

Tell them to take in ironing

or have a car boot sale

or a second job cleaning!

MrszClaus · 12/06/2022 09:24

It would annoy me too! Surely they have insurance? (Especially if it's a well known breed with issues) Or the vet would do a payment plan? If they've got the money for a pedigree dog they should have the money to look after it.

There's a couple on my Facebook begging for money so they can have their dream wedding next year - neither of them are dying or in any particular trouble, they just want people to pay for their wedding. I find it annoying they'd even think to set up a go fund me and ask!

SillyLittleBiscuit · 12/06/2022 09:25

If they’re struggling to fund and their dog is suffering they might see it as a last resort. I’d feel sorry for them rather than annoyed.

PuffinMcStuffin · 12/06/2022 09:26

Unfriend them, or at least block it from your feed, life is much more pleasant without people like that in it.

Crimeismymiddlename · 12/06/2022 09:29

I doubt anyone will give them anything. The drawback of begging for money on Facebook is that the people actually know them. It is always for things that they can afford/don’t need. Its not like we live in America and face bankruptcy for lifE saving surgery.

Just ignore it.

Psychologically a big trigger for annoyance/anger is when people do something we would feel we would never do - so I get angry when people park where they shouldn't, because I feel unable to ignore those rules.

Presumably you would not feel comfortable askingf or money in this way - so when you see it done it sets you off.

But people are all different and we can learn to just tune out this kind of shit - the existence of the message is not doing you any real harm.

Just ignore it, or unfollow the person.

This is why I deleted all my social media.

But why have a dog with well known health issues and not have insurance? Sad

Spidey66 · 12/06/2022 09:51

Too tight to take out pet insurance, especially important when your pet is well known to have health insurance, and now it's come back to bite them and they want others to pay. I'd tell them to bog off.

If it was, for example, a widowed pensioner with a mongrel who was a rescue, they had to stop the insurance to pay their heating, but their best friend who got them up and out every day (the dog!) needed an op, then I'd donate. Though hopefully charities like PDSA or the Blue Cross could be an option in that case.

Health issues not health insurance in 1st paragraph

PurassicJark · 12/06/2022 10:06

It's how rich people stay rich though, they get others to pay for their stuff.

Insurance doesn't cover everything.

Antarcticant · 12/06/2022 10:10

How old is the dog?

FionnulaTheCooler · 12/06/2022 10:11

YANBU. I unfriended a school mum acquaintance from Facebook for her constant "fundraising" requests for her child to do an expensive hobby. If you can't afford it without expecting others to pay for it then don't do it.
