Unhinged

I’m probably being unreasonable but it’s pissing me off how many times and in various circumstances I see women being described as “unhinged”.
Often for being upset or doing ill advised things and admittedly often for contacting other women accusing or suspecting they are having affairs with “their” partner. I’m mostly inspired to post this because a) of the post earlier which is indeed a worrying situation and b) it stings to hear people bandy about terms like “unhinged” (I’ve had this said of me who made a formal complaint about a consultant sexually assaulting me).
I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of a man being described as “unhinged “. Creepy. Weird. Never “unhinged” or “batshit”.
AIBU to think it’s a horrible way for women to express hatred for other women (as that’s where I’ve seen it expressed)

I think I called someone batshit on here earlier (not the poster but someone whose behaviour was impacting her). I didn't hate the woman because I didn't even know her, and she'd never know I referred to her as that, I just thought her behaviour sounded crazy (can't even remember what it was about). Not sure if I'd use the same term for a man or not, but whatever term I used would have exactly the same sentiment. I use the term prick for men but I don't use it for women, doesn't mean I'm a man hater either.

I think you're taking this too personally because of your horrible experience.

Blue4YOU · 11/06/2022 22:19

Yeah you are possibly right about that.
I don’t mind batshit as much as unhinged somehow

I think you’re projecting here. You had an awful experience and the word now has terrible associations for you, which is completely understandable - and I’m so sorry you had to go through that. But it doesn’t have those associations for most people and it’s definitely not a woman-specific term. I’ve definitely described men as unhinged, crazy, batshit, deranged etc many times!

Need2P · 11/06/2022 22:32

I've heard people referring to men as unhinged and bats hit crazy before

Blue4YOU · 11/06/2022 22:43

thank you all. Relief over here. I’m glad it’s not a woman only problem

100% agree. It's a really nasty thing to say. It's basically saying 'you're not right in the head, you're mad, your nuts, you need professional help from a psychiatrist.'

It's got fuck all to do with 'projecting,' and I'm sick of people spouting this crap (that someone is 'projecting,' when someone talks about something that's upset them.)

When someone calls a woman unhinged (and it's always women it's aimed at,) they may as well say 'you're mentally deranged and fucking hysterical.'

It's misogynistic, patronising, offensive bollocks. Right up there with 'calm down luv' and 'you need to get a sense of humour' when someone has been offended by a rude comment or insult.

Never heard that aimed at men in my life. And definitely not on here.

gardeninggirl68 · 11/06/2022 22:55

'unhinged' is often a very apt description.

FOJN · 11/06/2022 23:04

I'm usually quite alert about sexist language but I honestly hadn't picked up on unhinged. It's not a word I tend to use but I have generally seen it used about women.

I use batshit and arsehole for men and women.

gardeninggirl68 · 11/06/2022 22:55

'unhinged' is often a very apt description.

And it's very often not. It's quite often a nasty vile cunty insult.

gardeninggirl68 · 11/06/2022 23:06

not for the people ive used it for...its very apt actually. fits them well

PurpleButterflyWings · 11/06/2022 23:07

@gardeninggirl68 People who call others unhinged are often sub-intelligent, intellectually challenged oiks who have nothing intelligent to bring to the table.

GirlCrushxxx · 11/06/2022 23:59

theres plenty of unhinged people where i work!

customers mainly, general public!

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 12/06/2022 00:36

@PurpleButterflyWings

There's nothing wrong with 'unhinged.'

It literally means that someone's thinking is a bit loose , ie 'unhinged.'

It's not an insult.

"Cunty" on the other hand...well that IS plain vile and very misogynistic. Do you even know what that actually means?

It’s really not only women.

Sorry Op I voted YABU when I meant YANBU.

I hate it, it’s up there with hysterical.

Blue4YOU · 12/06/2022 01:42

That’s my worry - the hormones, the crazy, the “unhinged”

OP posts:
WeAreTheHeroes · 12/06/2022 01:50

I'm on another, current thread on here where a man has been described as batshit. I don't think unhinged or batshit are the same as hysterical, for example, which used to be frequently applied to women and pejorative.

'Hormones' is almost always women minimising their own needs by blaming hormones. Instead of owning their shit. And demanding more.

Unhinged is similar to deranged. Someone exhibiting behaviour that is out of the usual for the precipitating event. And not warranted. I'm not sure that's sexed. Unlike hysterical which is definitely misogynist.
