Hahahaha, designer items have always been overpriced and ugly but that is hilarious.

TirisfalPumpkin · 11/06/2022 16:52

It’s a ded clever juxtaposition of luxury fashion and everyday items. Wasn’t there a perfume a while back done to look like a bathroom spray cleaner?

very witty, probs, if you have the kind of life far removed from the carrying of heavy Tesco bags or scrubbing of toilets

lilao · 11/06/2022 16:53

Isn't this just what Balenziaga do?

They have released their own hi vis jacket at £2.8k!

I don't understand it but it seems they copy things on purpose

Antarcticant · 11/06/2022 16:55

Is it me or does that Tesco carrier look about 15 years out of date?

They're a sort of off-white colour now and the Tesco typeface is sans serif.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/06/2022 16:59

Makes a change from the duvet covers masquerading as frocks everywhere else!!

Crankley · 11/06/2022 17:20

Antarcticant Yes it is old but I remember it.

TirisfalPumpkin I'm sure there are cheaper witty items than £925.

This isn’t the first time Balenciaga have done something like this. Previously they copied took inspiration from Ikea bags, and as the article also shows, Louis VUitton has been similarly inspired by the checked laundry bags found in pound shops, as were Celine.

Back in the 80s, Alaïa‘s most recognisable print was actually the signature print of Tati, a French cut-price fashion chain.

Anya Hindmarch makes evening bags that resemble bags of Walker’s crisps.

As you can probably tell, I love when this stuff!

It's just the emperor's new clothes all over again. I think a lot of fashion designers are just evil-cackling at what they can get people to pay a fortune for.

I'm sure there are cheaper witty items than £925.

When I was a student, I bought a t-shirt from Kwik Save - plain white with their then-famous 'No Frills' logo on it, so you were 'styled' exactly the same as one of their economy tins of beans or loaves of bread. I've still got it in the loft.

The big difference is that they were laughing with their customers and not at them - plus I suppose they got a bit of free advertising thrown in to the mix (same as with a carrier bag). They sold them really cheaply - 99p iirc - and they were perfectly fine functional garments.

I miss Kwik Save Sad

TheWayoftheLeaf · 11/06/2022 17:41

I think it's meant to be kitch. Like satirical design.

bridgetreilly · 11/06/2022 17:48

Ah, for the days when carrier bags were only 5p.

TirisfalPumpkin · 13/06/2022 08:13

I think you've nailed why the 'clever' humour doesn't land so well, it's sneery.

I guess the £12 Lidl trainers are a recent example of the 'laughing with' a la Kwik-Save, and I'd unironically wear them.

CountryMouse22 · 19/06/2022 19:38

I wonder if Tesco will sue them for plagiarism!

SavoirFlair · 19/06/2022 19:42

Balenciaga have been doing this for TIME , @Crankley .

they played with the US political candidate logos. They had a go at the aforementioned high viz jacket. They take the ordinary and make it playful.

if you don’t get it, that’s fine - but it’s not anything particularly new or outrageous or wrong. They’re not about to go out of business any time soon, and Tesco are fine carrying on with some bag designs.

Ddot · 20/06/2022 07:48

Sorry! but I kind of like it

winnieanddaisy · 20/06/2022 10:50

My DGD has a pair of Balenciaga trainers which cost her parents over £700 a couple of Christmases ago . They are really bulky and we call them her clodhoppers 😂.

FiniteSagacity · 21/06/2022 19:44

Damn. I just recycled a Tesco carrier from days of yore (before they bio-degraded or were very thin). I obviously should have put it on eBay!

Crankley · 21/06/2022 21:50

Oh no! You could have sold it for a fortune Grin
