Moral dilemma - shred or sell?

Clearing out my late in laws home we bagged up some fur stoles and a couple of jackets that had belonged to my late MIL and her mother.

We have them in a bin bag and we’re not sure whether to shred them, we have access to a large guillotine, or sell them and donate money back to an animal charity.

YABU ~ destroy them

YANBU ~ Sell them and donate money to animal charity.

I was quite shocked to find them really. My late MIL never struck me as a fur person, and I never saw her wear one.

Oh, just sell them.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 10/06/2022 20:46

I can't see what good shredding them would do?

ChickensandCows · 10/06/2022 20:46

Why wouldn't you sell them? Especially of you're then going to do good with the money. Furs are generational and years ago many didnt think of them in the sake way we do now, so don't be judgey.

daisychainsandrainbows · 10/06/2022 20:48

Sell them. The animals' suffering has already happened, destroying them won't take that back. It's also wasteful of a perfectly usable item of clothing.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/06/2022 20:48

Why would you execute dead animal skin?!

Sell them, and do what you want w the money.

Destroying things is wasteful.

Fur used to be common so I dunno why you’re shocked.

You’re right of course. I work with elderly people who talk lovingly of furs they once had and use language we don’t anymore.

I suppose the charity wouldn’t ask where the money came from so I could donate it to the cancer charity that studies the unusual cancer that she had.

Maybe they were passed on to her and she didn't want them either! I would sell them I think, as it seems a waste.

Tigofigo · 10/06/2022 20:53

I don't have a problem with people wearing vintage fur any more than I would with leather.

I WOULD have a problem with people destroying perfectly good and expensive items of clothing though.

iwishiwasafish · 10/06/2022 20:53

Some animal shelters take fur coats to use for bedding for abandoned animals (puppies kittens etc) because of the way it holds the heat and provides comfort.

DirtyteaCup · 10/06/2022 21:12

The main market- Russia isnt an option at the moment.

TwoBlueFish · 10/06/2022 21:16

You can donate them to PETA www.peta.org.uk/action/donate-fur-peta/?amp

it’s what I’m going to do with the boys if fur we found in my MIL’s things.

Thebeastofsleep · 10/06/2022 21:24

Sell them.

I have my grand fur coat. I wear it. I wouldn't buy new fur, and I'm very careful not to buy dog fur under the guise of fake fur. However vintage/ old fur doesn't bother me. And I disagree it creates a market for new fur.

XenoBitch · 10/06/2022 21:25

Bury them and have a funeral. No joke, this was a suggestion I was given from a vegan, and it was about a leather coat!

I second sell and donate the money to an animal charity, if it would ease your conscience. There is demand for vintage right now, and that includes fur.

Ponderingwindow · 10/06/2022 21:30

I believe it’s wasteful to destroy vintage furs. They already exist. They are functional pieces of clothing. We understand that more should not be made.

if you really don’t want anyone to wear them, find a way for them to be repurposed. Reuse shows more respect for the animals involved.

ChitChatChatter · 10/06/2022 22:21

A friend similarly inherited a fur coat and found it very difficult to sell. Not sure what she did in the end.

I Agree

Sorry people, I’ve just reactivated an old post not realising.

alasangne · 08/12/2022 07:39

Did you manage to sell it?

Did you manage to sell it?

We did, and the proceeds went to the cancer unit that treated MIL.
