Scary - Or Just Me?

Reading a week-old newspaper which is featuring photographs about places celebrating the royal jubilee. There's a photograph from a bar in Santa Monica, California, called 'Ye Old King's Head', with its Union flag bunting. This led me to look up the place on Tripadvisor as I've had three holidays in Santa Monica and visited that place each time, so wanted to see photos.

The 'scary' part is a banner came up on Tripadvisor that said, "The both of you could use a trip", and to 'download the app' to 'Get the holiday you deserve'. The scary part isn't 'download the app', or 'Get the holiday you deserve'; it's "The both of you could use a trip". How does Tripadviser know it was 'the both of us' visiting', rather than family, friends, etc? I know I'm a bit paranoid about technology, but it's not like I've ever used Tripadvisor to organise anything (if you even can?) But, to be fair, the 'both of us' do need a trip to get away from reality 😧.

….it’s just you.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/06/2022 20:51

scary because it’s buying data about you, or because you think it’s woo??

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/06/2022 20:52

I think it probably pops up like that for most people.

Notimeforaname · 10/06/2022 20:54

A comedy club emails me periodically saying "Your partner wanted us to email you about this fantastic date night line up"

Ive only ever gone there with groups of friends.

My favourite part of this post is the completely unnecessary back story about Santa Monica and the pub which I assumed was going to be haunted or something

ShadowoftheFall · 10/06/2022 21:02

Why is that scary? Google has a profile on you, you search, buy and visit places that couples go. I bet if I went to that site it would refer to me being a single parent.

Okay, I now see that I'm even more technology unsavvy than I thought I was. I started this thread because I couldn't understand how Tripadvisor knew I'd visited a place with one other person. So, in response to @Luredbyapomegranate, because I thought it was 'woo' as in eerie. I've now been put right. Technology is following me everywhere, even though my mobile phone doesn't even allow me to send/receive photos, etc, as it hasn't received updated software for a couple of years. So it's just used for texts and calls.

As for the 'Completely unnecessary back story about Santa Monica and the pub ...' comment by someone; well that was the whole point of starting the thread, because that's how I realised how much I was being tracked without living my life on-line.

This reminds me of something weird I encountered on a website. I was browsing rings on The Diamond Store, looked more closely at one that I really liked so scrolled through the pics of it. One of the pics was of a gift card in an envelope (guessing something like this comes with the ring box). It stated Dear Spangly, love you forever, Mr Spanglys first name x

Coincidence or not? Just looked it again now and it still says the same…weird.

Anyone else tried saying something random like dog kennel, caravan, balloon, repeatedly around their phone for a few days, and then received adverts for that thing? I was shocked when it worked.

I thought I'd give it a try myself. The card for me says "Dear Lisa, love you forever, Mike". I'm not Lisa and DH is not Mike. Neither if our names even remotely resemble them. So either coincidence, or they've never had reason to track my cookies before.

FlissyPaps · 10/06/2022 22:39

Out of interest, what type of phone do you have OP?

FromEden · 10/06/2022 22:49

I stayed in santa monica last year and went to that pub. I throughly enjoyed the sausage rolls which aren't easy to come by here in the US

Sorry, I know thats unrelated to your point lol

itsnotmeitsu · 12/06/2022 19:44

@FlissyPaps - It wasn't my phone, which does nothing, it was my laptop. @FromEden > We've been in that pub few times over the years, never had sausage rolls but did do a pub quiz :-)

@DanielRicciardosSmile > That's making it even weirder, because I am 'Lisa' in real life :-)
