To think she should be entitled to British passport because of me?

Trying to get my ten week old dd’s passport sorted. I was born here to Irish parents and hold an Irish passport. My mum was also born here but was raised in Ireland. My dad born and raised in Ireland. I have always held an Irish passport but my birth cert says I was born in London etc so I think I could get a British passport without any problems?

anyway, apparently I need to supply my mums birth cert and marriage cert to prove dd is entitled to a British passport. I didn’t have this trouble with my first dd? My birth certificate was enough! This has been going on since she was born so almost ten weeks..

i have supplied:
her (British) birth cert
my (British) birth cert
my (Irish) passport

now they want
my mums (British birth cert)
her marriage cert.

is this normal!? It’s impossible to get anyone on the phone!!?

What year were you born? I believe that if born after 1983 you would have to have some other right to UK citizenship than just being born here. This could be naturalisation as you've been here so long but you'd have to apply, or presumably your mum was born before 1983 so proving you and DD would have the right to registration through her being born here. I worked for Visas and Immigration ages ago so don't quote me on that but if you were born after 1983 then that's why.

When were you born? The rules changed for people born after 1981, and grandparents details are often requested for applications (without the Irish passport adding to the confusion) for children born to parents born post 1981.

I'd hazard a guess you will need it.

Yep, that's why. Prior to 01/01/1983, if you were born here, you were British. Your parents nationality comes into it after that date, which is why they are asking for that evidence.

What you have supplied doesn't prove your nationality.

You may not be automatically entitled to British citizenship, depending on when you were born and what citizenship your mum’s parents had. If they had British citizenship, your mum is entitled to it and so are you. If they were Irish citizens then you may have to naturalise for gain British citizenship, depending on when you were born. Is your daughter’s dad in the picture and British? If so she can get her passport through his citizenship.

Sorry, I meant to say it doesn't prove British nationality. Obviously your Irish passport proves you hold Irish nationality!

You need to prove her right to British citizenship. If you had a British passport then that would have been your proof of your British citizenship. As you don't have that you need to provide proof by proving your parents passed their British citizenship on to you as after 1983 just being born here doesn't make you a British citizen.

I had problems with getting my son a UK passport. I'm UK born to UK born parents. My son was born in Australia. I had to provide my birth cert along with both of my parents birth certs and their marriage cert. I don't understand the significance of their marriage cert....what if they weren't married?! I hope you get it sorted soon, it's a complete pain.

They'll have been checking you weren't British by descent and were able to pass your citizenship on.

Your daughter is definitely British- born in UK to an Irish national confers British nationality.

They always seem to forget that there are different rules for Irish nationals here vs other foreign nationals. Afraid I am not sure how to help you though!

But you're Irish not British. Is her father British? If so she is British otherwise you'll have to apply. Unless Irish citizens have a different status to other nationals in the UK. The best thing to do is to speak to the Irish embassy in the UK and see what they say.

It sounds like they're checking your status for some reason. She's definitely British.

I'm having a baby is Aus I am British.
I'm British my naturalisation (wasn't born there) does that mean my baby won't get a British passport? As none of my parents are British.

@brookln yes they can get a British passport. But they won’t be able to pass it on to any children they have unless the children (your grandchildren) are born in the UK. Citizenship only gets passed down one generation unless born within the country.

i got her an Irish passport but wondered for a while if she can have the British passport too or not

haven’t had time to look into it in detail so following this to see if anyone actually knows 😂
