Boobs on the TV!

I had the TV on in the background and 'Paul Hollywood's Big Continental Road Trip' is currently on. He's in Germany and I was a bit shocked when he visited some naturists and at 3pm on BBC2 they were showing topless women (uncensored) and had blurred out the male and female parts.

Now I'm not a prude or anything but I wasn't really sure why this was ok but broadcasting nude people pre-watershed in other non-sexual ways wasn't. Why is it ok to show topless naturists in the middle of the day but they wouldn't broadcast say Sonia coming out of the shower topless in Eastenders?

Just seems inconsistent to me...

What level of nudity they will broadcast pre-watershed is dependent on the context.

A family viewing drama like Eastenders that has been scripted and directed will avoid nudity, even boobs.

The show you mention is about naturists who spend time unclothed and showing them in this state makes sense. Blurring out boobs would be distracting and boobs on a naturist aren't going to be too shocking to viewers.

In a health or human biology / educational segment where it makes sense to show "full frontal" genitals they will do this as contextually it makes sense and isn't going to cause undue distress to people watching.

I was very surprised as a student about 20 years ago to chuck the TV on for neighbours at 1:30pm-ish and be greeted with Barbara Windsor with her baps out instead. I'm presuming it was a Carry On film on a bank holiday!

So it's not a new thing neccessarily.

Personally, I'm all for the normalisation of nudity on TV, it's nuts that you can see someone getting whacked round the head with an iron on Eastenders but not someone coming out of the shower.

Europe is much free-er with thier nudity on TV than us, and it's got to be healthier than the opposite end of the spectrum in the USA, where you can see someone be stabbed to death pre watershed, but god forbid theres a nipple!

Actors' contracts will stipulate whether they will or will not do nudity. So scripting is dictated by that and the fact it's a "family" show.

Also, if they're not censoring men's nipples, why should they censor women's? To censor it would be to say this is sexual and also naturism is sexual... When it's a natural thing. Like tits are natural things. They've just been sexualised since God's dog was a pup because men treat them like objects to be ogled and not just another body part.

Agree with PP that people only think female nipples are sexual because we're hardwired to react that way. No one would make a post about seeing a man's nipples on daytime tv.

They are only breasts? They feed our young ... they are not sexual !
