What would you think of a friend googled your name?

And screenshotted (is that a word!!) the results and sent them to you?

It's a very old female friend so I am at a loss as to why she felt the need to do this... feeling slightly creeped out but I can't articulate why! I'm an open book with a fairly dull life so I'm not sure what she expected it to reveal?!

YABU - it's a perfectly normal thing to do
YANBU- it's creepy (but why?)

She's bored, maybe hit a dull patch in the office.

Is it a clumsy way to reconnect?

Is there something in the google writeup that she might have found surprising, eg you got married and she didn't know etc?

HousePlantLandlord · 08/06/2022 14:36

YANBU - I don’t understand why her mind went to googling your name. It’s the kind of thing you do when you have a crush on someone.

minipie · 08/06/2022 14:37

Googling a friend is fairly normal I reckon especially someone you’ve not seen in a while

Screenshotting and sending to you is blooming odd.

Testina · 08/06/2022 14:37

Context?
Was it out of the blue or do you speak regularly?
Any message with it?

Acunningruse · 08/06/2022 14:37

No as I say I've led a very dull life really! The only thing was a review relating to a previous workplace which mentioned me by name and she sent it to me with laughing emojis. I said how did you come across that and she said "I googled your name"

We text every couple days and I saw her last weekend so not like a 'wonder what she's been up to" thing

Frenemy?

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 08/06/2022 14:41

I wouldn’t think anything of it. I suppose I’d assume she must have been bored to do it.

It does seem a bit weird on the face of it but I feel like I need more context!

When you say an old female friend, do you mean it's someone you're not in regular contact with? Had she Googled you in the hope of reconnecting on social media or something like that, and then found something funny/interesting in the results that she thought you might find entertaining?! (I'm clutching at straws here, obviously...)

Or was it someone you're in regular contact with who wouldn't actually need to Google you to find you on Facebook or whatever? Because that makes it a lot weirder I think.

Was there any explanation with the screenshot, even just something like 'I Googled you and look what I found, there's a millionaire in San Francisco with the same name as you, for a minute there i thought you'd won the lottery' or something?

I would honestly be a bit freaked out if one of my mates was keen to inform me that they'd been Googling my name for literally no reason. It's the letting you know element of it. Why announce that she's been keeping tabs on you, and send you the proof? I totally get your discomfort.

OK, yes, I'd be wondering why she'd Googled me and I would feel the same as you.

LondonQueen · 08/06/2022 14:45

I google and facebook stalk everyone (my own version of a background checkGrin) but I'd never screenshot and send it to them, that's just weird!

Irishfarmer · 08/06/2022 15:08

Not sure why she sent it onto you. I don't google people but if I did I think I'd only screen shot it and send it on if it was funny and we were very close and I thought she would get a laugh from it too.

She might have seen something about googling yourself/ friends. This post inspired me to google myself and a sister I am currently texting

nokidshere · 08/06/2022 15:11

I googled a friend of mine to get a proper pronunciation of her surname. It seemed less rude than keep asking her how to say it properly.

Anyway, there were 3 whole google search pages for her, and Images. Turns out she is an expert in her field, has led international conferences, written a dozen books and participated in more and has reports/articles published all over the world. I'd known her for 5yrs at this point and she had never so much as mentioned any of it! I screen shotted the first page of google and texted her with a few 😮😮😮 and a 'you kept that little lot quiet eh' message. Thankfully She laughed her head off.

We've now been friends for 12yrs or more and she still surprises me frequently. The latest one being that she recently illustrated a children's book! Very humble lady! It seems there is nothing she can't turn her hand to and I'm in awe of her.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2022 15:17

It wouldn't bother me TBH. I have just googled my name, and the only ones that comes up is a Facebook person with my name, but it isn't me, someone in Australia and someone who is dead.

memyselfi · 08/06/2022 16:55

Was it meant for someone else I wonder.

VapeVamp12 · 08/06/2022 16:57

I google most people tbh
I don't screenshot and send them the results though.
I also google myself sometimes though, so maybe I'm just odd.
