To think that actors we see are a mixed bag?

Hi,

So this is a positive thread, don’t worry, but I often think about how average some actors’ performances are, but I also think how believable and wonderful they can be too.

Performances I have enjoyed recently include:-

  • Charlize Theron in Young Adult
  • Kaitlyn Devers in Unbelievable
  • Jodie Comer in Killing Eve
  • Cate Blanchett and Laura Linney in just about everything they’re cast in
Can anyone recommend any films that had performances in that really touched them, please? Or actors that are not so well-known that they’d recommend a watch of?

Am trying not to mention any that I disliked (don’t push me!); so I suppose my AIBU is am I daft to be mesmerized by some actors’ performances??!

The actors in the killing and the bridge really moved me. I thought they were amongst the best programs I've ever seen on TV.

I liked the actors in Monsters University. I thought they had come on so much since we first saw them in Monsters Inc.

I don't watch a lot of films but I do like a box set. The best dramatic moment I have seen in recent past was by Brenda Fricker in the adaption of Holding. You may not know her but in episode 3 she has a scene that is so painful and beautiful that I stood to the spot to watch it. It was an acting master class.

Sarah Lancashire and Siobhan Finneran in Happy Valley.

I haven’t watched ANY of these recommendations so far, so thanks all! And Sarah Lancashire and Brenda Fricker are both excellent- love the way they are choosey about the material they go
for.

No prizes for guessing where you got your user name then @HollowTalk i agree that Kim Bodnia and Sofia Helin were amazing in the Bridge. The pain in Bodnia's face was so utterly believable and the hurt and confusion Helin could show as Saga whilst being so smart and switched on. Her ability to just flick the emotions on her face was amazing.

River Phoenix in Stand By Me
Edward Norton in American History X

I can't think of any others at the moment

Kim Bosnia- awesome and loved him in Killing Eve. Edward Norton in American History X was mesmerizing in a grotesque way, given the subject matter. He reminds me a bit of Christian Bale in his sheer commitment to a controversial role.
