Neighbours and weed smell

We live in an old terraced house, the house next door is split into flats. Bottom flat is a single bloke in his thirties who often has mates round, top flat is a Mum with two daughters in their twenties who often have boyfriends round.

On good terms with both, take in parcels, pass the time of day in the street, once the guy on the ground floor let me climb into my garden from his when I locked myself out. I have both their numbers.

For the last few months the smell of weed has been seeping into our house via the shared chimney stack. All these houses have fireplaces in every room but none are used for fires any more. It’s unmistakeable and very strong, and the main room where we smell it is my 5 year-old son’s bedroom. I’d say it happens about twice a week. My son has asked me what the smell is. I’m fairly relaxed about weed smoking, but it can’t be great for him, can it?

WIBU to talk to the neighbours about this? And how to go about it? Thing is, I can’t tell which neighbour it is, because it could be coming up from the downstairs flat, or through from the one that backs on to the first floor where the bedroom is. Both fireplaces are blocked up with plywood boards. I can’t really tell them what to do in their own homes, can I? But I am sure that they will have no idea we can smell it and would probably be mortified if they knew.

When I say “both fireplaces” I mean both on our side, we have them on the ground floor and the first floor. No idea about the neighbours’ fireplaces.
