Bonfire 0930AM

Really? Am I? Neighbour keeps lighting bonfires during the day. Nasty tannelised wood which produces thick clouds of smoke. On good sunny days. At 0930 am. Especially at the weekends. Repeatedly asked politely in person to desist. Complained to the council. They've done nothing. Complained in a polite manner on the road WhatsApp. Just a retort that he has to do it as he has tons to burn. What do I do?!! It's driving me round the twist.

Why can't he take his shit to the tip?

allotmentgardener · 03/06/2022 22:49

@monkeysox I suggested this. apparently its not possible!

@allotmentgardener he's a selfish fucker.

PurpleandPlatinum · 03/06/2022 22:55

I love a bonfire. I think it smells nice and is fun. We always had bonfires as a child and still do now.

allotmentgardener · 03/06/2022 23:02

@PurpleandPlatinum 7pm yes and yes! 0930 am no.

I love bonfires, they smell, sound and look fab. Like a previous poster they remind me of happy times growing up.

mumda · 03/06/2022 23:31

Video it. Ask local councillor to call round whilst fires burning.
Report each and every time to eh.
Send them photos and evidence too

balalake · 04/06/2022 08:17

How easy is it for a hose to 'accidentally' put it out?

DogsAndGin · 04/06/2022 08:19

Complain to the council

birdling · 04/06/2022 08:20

Where on earth is he getting so much of this wood to burn???
I agree about the hose pipe.

JolieJ · 04/06/2022 09:12

Following, our neighbours do this and it makes the air so toxic. We've never complained but they're not the type to listen even if we did.

Are people legally allowed to burn stuff in their gardens?

orwellwasright · 04/06/2022 10:11

Didn't think you were allowed to just burn rubbish. Also most councils have byelaws regarding times bonfires are allowed.

What exactly did your council say when you complained? There's a difference between 'this isn't a problem' and 'this is a problem but we don't have the resources to help'

allotmentgardener · 04/06/2022 10:44

I have complained to the council. They sent him a letter. Didn't make any difference 😥I've appealed to him personally. I think he's just an arse.

Any complaint to the council about neighbours will have to be declared if you sell your house OP. Can you do it anonymously?

AmandaHoldensLips · 04/06/2022 10:55

I lived near to a complete arsehole who used to actively go and find things to bring back to his garden and burn. I hate people who make bonfires. Unless they live in the middle of nowhere, they're dick heads.

If you’re burning untreated wood, on a chilly autumn evening, it’s lovely, yes. But that isn’t what’s happening here.

The OP’s neighbour is burning treated wood that produces thick smoke and he’s doing it in the morning on a sunny day when people would reasonably be expected to be relaxing in their gardens. That’s not lovely and cosy and happy. It’s antisocial. The smoke makes clothes stink, the smuts get everywhere and it’s also very polluting - it’s really bad for air quality.

We’re not talking about toasting marshmallows round a campfire in the evening, here, we’re talking about someone burning any old crap on a daily basis because they can’t be arsed to go to the tip. Big difference.

Exactly. Some people are too obtuse to grasp that not all bonfires are ‘fun’ Hmm 🤷🏻‍♀️

He’s right though. You can’t tip treated wood.

To those who say a bonfire is great....it's bloody horrendous as an asthmatic.
