Car insurance details lost - how to find out more

Apologies I know it's not an AIBU post.

Has anyone got any idea of how to find out which company your car is insured with?

My email got hacked and now all of my emails have disappeared and can't find any details with my bank 🙈. Any way of finding out? I know it is insured I'm just interested in who with 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Look in your banking app for the payment details for the premium? So monthly direct debit details or the one off payment at the beginning of the term?

The Motor Insurance Database can tell anyone IF a car is insured, but I wonder if they would also know by which company if you called them?

Ooh theres a thread on here about a neighbour who has no mot and tax so should they report it....someone put a link to a place where you can check and confirm car insurance .

Problem is Ive no idea where that thread is - not a whizz on searching but you might come accross it OP!!!

Your bank statement must show you whom you paid, or where a monthly payment is going if you’re doing it that way.

Has a hacker actually deleted all your emails? Can’t your email provider help you recover them?

Maybe next time download and save a copy of the insurance certificate. What were you planning to do if you needed to give your details or make a claim?

Why can't you find details with your bank?

If you click on my link above OP, click 'download Form' under 'Your insurance history'. You can do a free Subject Access Request and they will tell you who your current insurer is on the database.

I tried to look through my banking app as we did a one off payment. But I can't see anything going out for insurance 🙈 I can see my DH sent me a payment to my account to pay the insurance but it never went out of my account. 🥴

The free search I did says the vehicle is insured until august but doesn't tell me with who 🤦🏻‍♀️

@ThreeLittleDots is spot on. Visit the website www.mib.org.uk/managing-insurance-data/requesting-your-data/ and fill in the contact form. As I recall I had to print it out and sign it, scan it and email it back. It took 2-3 weeks but they emailed back with details of the insurer and I was able to contact them to get my login details reset and access my insurance.

There must be a payment going out of your account somewhere, surely?

And on that note check your car is taxed. Ours wasn't just got reminder. Must not have had initial letter in the post.

When I had the same problem I called the company I thought it was with (had been insured with them previously). Explained I was a complete idiot and was I insured with them, they said no, but apparently had access to a database as told me who I was with (apparently a sister company of my original insurance). They probably weren't supposed to tell me, but most people will try and help if they can

They will bombard you with mail/email by the end of June so if you don't solve it before then your answer will be in the form of renewal invitation.

The OP has lost control of her email, though, so she will not get a reminder that way unless she’s recovered her mail by then.

I haven’t had a postal renewal notice for about 8 years. All mine is done online. I think it’s the same for many companies.

If it expires in August then you must have paid for it last July / August.

Look at your bank & credit card statements for around that time?

Otherwise the subject access request as per PP is your answer.

When I couldn't remember, I phoned my previous insurer. They could t tell me who I was insured with but would confirm for me when I named some insurers by saying yes, that's the one to one of them!
