Should women feel 'lucky' to not have been attacked by men?

Many years ago I had a lift home by a cab driver who some years later was convicted for raping and killing women he had picked up in his cab. The man had been very chatty during the drive and had (kindly, I thought at the time) walked me to the main door of the flats because it was dark. At the door he had asked if I wanted him to come in for coffee. I declined politely, saying I was very tired. He seemed fine about it and left.

In more recent years, I had smiled and said hello to a man I passed on a rural walk. I had a big dog with me at the time. He smiled and said hello back. He then went on to murder a lone woman in the same vicinity.

AIBU to believe that I've been extremely lucky not to have been these men's victims, and I would be interested to know if my experience is unusual or whether any other woman have had these experiences?
