Many years ago, I cut a picture out of a magazine- it would either have been Hello or OK- it could have been anything from 1994-2000

It was a picture of a large concert that had taken place- it was an outdoor performance- the camera was looking down onto water - the stage was a large open book, really huge - there were about 20 actors on at least lining up like armies and there was a gigantic grim reaper at the side of the stage. It looked somewhere like the Mynach Theatre in Cornwall but I am almost certain it was in Europe- Vienna? maybe?

I know it is the MOST obscure thing but I had managed to keep the picture until very recently and the book it was in got accidentally thrown away - all manner of googling with all combinations of things I remember has yielded no results so far- I know some of you are excellent detectives, can anyone help?

This is going to be the fasted MN obscure search answer ever. It was the Bregenzer Festspiele in Austria, and the one with the book was from the year 1999-200! It's a giant theatre stage built in front of Bodensee and they construct massive elaborate sets every year. There was also a James Bond scene from the Quantum Solace that was filmed there.

And the opera was Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera.

crochetmonkey74 · 26/05/2022 11:57

Out of interest , what did you all put in to Google or had it already rung a bell?

I searched 'book stage water' and selected images

Spitescreen · 26/05/2022 12:00

It rang a bell. I didn’t see the production, but my friend worked on it.

I knew what I was right away because I live in Austria :)! We visited that stage many years ago when it had a different setup and it was incredible. It's in Bregenz which is the furtherest corner of Austria from Vienna (basically on the Swiss border) so it's a very popular tourist attraction for people from Vienna to see!
