Gambling advertising on Mumsnet

Who decides what is acceptable to advertise here?

I’m not surprised to see coffee or nappies advertised on Mumsnet, but I do find today’s online gaming promotion pretty shocking tbh.

The adverts can be influenced by what you or others sharing your internet connection search for, so perhaps you need to look a bit closer to home.

I’ve never seen a gambling ad and I’m on here for hours each day.

Happylittlepickle · 25/05/2022 22:26

Ironically there's a gambling ad on this thread for me 😂

coffeecupsandfairylights · 25/05/2022 22:40

Most advertising is linked to your own search history and that of other people in your household AFAIK.

I've never seen a gambling ad on here - mine are normally for holidays and anything animal or food related!

ChagSameachDoreen · 25/05/2022 22:52

It's funny when people don't understand targeted ads. You're getting gambling ads because someone using your IP address has been on gambling sites.

Musicalmaestro · 25/05/2022 23:08

Would the Lottery count?
Can’t think of any other connection.

Ah, just thought, have had a visitor. ( Bit shocked now tbh)

Yes, they are targeted ads. The lottery is gambling. There is also a gambling ad on this thread for me, probably linked to the subject although I did use a gambling website on my phone recently (eurovision, didn't win, probably won't gamble again!)

XenoBitch · 25/05/2022 23:15

The ads I get on MN seem random. Current one is holiday hotels, and I often get ones for child related things... I don't have kids.

saraclara · 25/05/2022 23:27

I don't gamble at all, I live alone, and no-one else has been anywhere near my internet or Wi-Fi for.months. But I get the gambling ad. So it's not just down to targeted advertising

Musicalmaestro · 25/05/2022 23:27

Right, my visitor says they haven’t accessed any relevant sites.

Anyway, my point still stands, despite a previous poster finding it funny, doesn’t a website ( Mumsnet) have any control/ choice over who can advertise?

See my post above. Don't go making assumptions about your visitor.

Musicalmaestro · 25/05/2022 23:35

Thanks saraclara I agree, and think it’s not targeted in this case.
Unless it’s because I’ve been looking at the Money section here!
