I had a root canal (stage 1) several weeks ago after waiting over 6 months for it. I couldn’t afford to go private and the NHS had a long waiting list hence the long wait. I was relieved to finally have it done as the pain was torture. However, the person booking the appointment didn’t make me a 2nd appointment and now it’s another 6 month wait for the 2nd stage. They said it’s fine to wait that long and the temp filling will last. As long as the pain is gone I’m happy to wait, however, the temporary filling keeps falling out. I’m not rough on my teeth and have been eating soft food and avoiding that side of my mouth, however last week I was eating a bit of buttered bread and it came out. it’s come out 3 times now, is there anything I can do to stop it happening constantly for the next 6 months until the treatment is complete? I can’t keep having it fall out and trips to the dentist as it’s not practical with work and I’m scared the root ends up sore and infected again (is that even a possibility?!)

anyone know of anything I could do or have any tips? I would drive the length of England right now if I could have the treatment completed sooner but unfortunately private is not doable.

If it's going to be in for six months it needs to be something more durable than what you have got obviously. another reason why it might keep falling out as if it's too high when you bite.

The temporary filling has failed. Go back to the surgery in person and tell them you need another appt now. Good luck!

Emergency dentist? Check your local hospital and give them a call as they should have en emergency dentist. Or call your dentist and ask? You can buy temporary filling from most pharmacies or on amazon. I have sympathy as I went through similar and waited 2 years with a temporary filling due to covid and only got it fixed last month

When I had a root canal last they put a proper filling in rather than a temp as temporary fillings are only designed to last a few weeks at most. They then just drilled through the filling when finishing the work. If it's going to be a long wait I would insist your dentist does that.

You can either go to the dentist and insist on a proper filling, or just buy the temporary fillings from the pharmacy and keep doing it yourself to save you regular trips to the dentist. I wouldn't have thought a temporary filling would last for 6 months.

They should have put a proper filling in but you can buy temporary filling in pharmacies or on Amazon. DD was in a similar position when Covid hit and the dentist shut their doors and the temp filling generally lasted a few weeks before crumbling - it's not ideal but works. That way you don't have to keep going to the dentist to have it put in. It's the same stuff they use so no real benefit of going.
